Jack O'Neill

Candidate for VP Education

Jack O'Neil.

Hi, my name is Jack O’Neill and I am running to be your VP Education.

I am currently in my final year of undergraduate studies, studying History and International Relations; I am also President of the PIR Society as well as the Academic Representative on SOC this year!

Going into its second year, the role of VP Education is vitally important in implementing the changes recommended with the Academic Review but it is also about introducing new, invigorating ideas to not only protect your education from frequent challenges but also to improve it.

Assessing the way we are assessed

If elected I would conduct a review of how assessments are carried out across the university. This will cover timings of assessments; the split between formative and summative assessments as well as the methods used for assessing. This also means broadening the selection of assessment methods: more choice and greater preparation for after university.

Study Space

EWD Library has brought up many issues amongst students so it is imperative that these are constantly addressed to improve the facility. However, the study space debate isn’t restricted to the library and as your representative I would lobby the college on issues ranging from computer lab use to granting later access to academic buildings.

Student Voice

I want to amplify your voice rather than muffle it. I believe that students should be part of the key decisions that affect our education: making us a partner in the educational development at the college rather than a passenger. This will include students being present on panels for academic staff recruitment so lecturers are tested on teaching and not just research.

Academic Societies

As SOC rep for Academic Societies this year I have witnessed the issues that they face and speaking with other SOC Reps; they are frequently very different to other societies. This is because their needs are different. Consequently, I would alter the way Academic Societies are viewed in addition to improving relations with departments and forming guidelines on these.

Academic Rep System

The Academic Review signposted 42 considerations for changes to the Rep system. I will focus on the restructuring of the system; transforming it into an effective model that provides clarity and results rather than simply ticking a box in student voice

Back Jack this election and I will be backing you!
