Holly Hughes

Candidate for VP Societies and Media

Holly Hughes.

Hi everyone, I’m Holly Hughes, third year historian and current President of Ballroom and Latin and this year I am campaigning to become your VP Societies and Media!

This is a role that I have been passionate about pursuing since my first year at university and I feel that now, after three years of being involved in societies, it’s time to show you what I can do.

Having worked closely with the SU, and in collaboration with various societies and clubs, I feel that I have a well established understanding of what is wanted and needed by student groups. This role is about offering the support, guidance and innovative ideas needed to allow you and your societies to flourish.

If elected I will work on rebuilding the relationships not only between the SU and the media suites, but also media outlets and societies, by pushing for promotion of society events through our very own student run teams. I will ensure one-one meetings with station managers next year to clarify and review the media charter.

I will introduce optional welfare training for society committee members, alongside establishing Welfare representatives to ensure that the students feel supported by their SU in all aspects of society life.

I will lobby the college to ensure the renovations for the sports centre include the building of a mirrored dance studio to be used by societies and sports teams alike. I will push to ensure Medicine’s refurbishments means societies are left with a space accessible to all and free of charge to use during the day.

Academic societies and their needs are vastly different from many societies held under the jurisdiction of VP Societies and Media. Therefore, I will work with the VP Education to improve relations between societies and departments and offer continued support through these changes.

By creating a transparent breakdown of how society funding is decided, and offering weekly office hours I hope to create more open dialogue with societies. I also wish to implement an online space, much like the Bright Ideas platform where societies will be able to post complaints and Ideas to be taken to council.

I’m looking forward to meeting you all during campaign week, and remember, vote Holly!
