My Experience

Hi, my name is Hanan Isaaq, a finalist and I’d love to be Welfare and Diversity Sabb. Having been on a committee for three years as well as being heavily involved with student life both on and off campus, I’m aware that there are a lot of changes that could be made. Your voice will be heard not only within the SU, but also the University, and as your Welfare officer I will represent you as a student community and make your university experience the best it can possibly be.

My Aims

My first priority is housing. During my time at RHUL I’ve set up a not-for profit organization to tackle the inequalities students face when renting private accommodation, but there’s still a lot more to be done. I’d like to work closer with letting agents and landlords in Egham and Englefield Green so as to create more accountability and transparency. I’d also like to aid lower income and international students with guarantor fees. I will strive to make sure every student knows all available options before they sign any contracts and will also aim to lower the extortionate fees we’re charged.

My second aim is to improve student life both on and off campus. On campus, I’ll work to address previous issues we’ve had with the health center, mental health support, support for victims and will aim to create a higher sense of welfare.

Off campus, I’ll aim to build a good relationship with Runnemede Borough Council and police to ensure your views are heard in the city as well as on campus. One of my campaigns would be a “Save Our Streetlights” campaign. I’d also like to work to increase parking around campus and to work with the Council to ease tensions with local residents about this.

Lastly, I’d like to focus on employability. I’d work closely with Careers to make sure you know all of the opportunities available to you, as well as providing more part time jobs for students on and off campus. Whether this comes from organizing more job fairs, publicizing more internships and placements, or providing more help in finding and securing a job, I’ll make sure to champion this.
