Phoebe Hughes

Candidate for VP Welfare and Diversity

Phoebe Hughes.

As a final year Geography student, I have been able to participate in a range of societies and activities which have helped me to engage with a wide array of people. Whilst being a Peer Guide within my department, I welcomed first year students and encouraged them to be involved in campus life. Through the RHUL Swimming Team I have volunteered at SportsAble- a charity which helps disabled individuals access sport. Using this experience, I have been able to understand the needs of, and restrictions placed on, disabled people and have been given an insight into how I can help within the VP role. This has been further aided by my dissertation which is focused on LGBTQ+ experiences of the home. My project has given me an insight into how I can help through the VP role and how charities, such as the SU, can help liberation groups.

I currently hold a part-time position at The Hub and balance work with my degree and extra-curricular activities. Through this, I have shown myself to be motivated and organised. These skills will be essential as VP Welfare and Diversity as I decide which ideas to prioritise and balance listening to your voices with my own campaign.

My Campaign

Create a system to accredit estate agents and landlords so that student housing is reasonably priced, safely maintained and individuals are treated fairly. Based on a 5 -star system, the SU would rank estate agents and landlords based on factors such as value for money, quality of housing, response rate and student experiences. Lobby the university to provide not only enough housing for all students who desire it on campus but also ensure that there is affordable housing on campus.

Continue the current work with the Health Centre. Lobby the university to employ more health professionals. Lobby for an online booking system to reduce time spent booking appointments and ensure students can inform the centre of cancellations.

Focus on mental health and spotting signs early. Train a specific committee member within liberation groups with the tools to spot signs of mental illness early and support those who are suffering. Once this has implemented, role the scheme out to all societies and sports teams to encompass the whole campus.
