Get Involved in South Asian Heritage Month

Throughout the year, we love to celebrate all the different cultures and traditions of our campus community. Over the summer, we’re turning our attention to South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM)!

Throughout the year, we love to celebrate the different cultures and traditions of our campus community. Over the summer, we’re turning our attention to South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM)!

In celebration of the region’s main monsoon month, SAHM takes place from 18 July – 17 August and seeks to commemorate and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories, and communities. First introduced in 2020, SAHM was established to recognise the diverse heritage and cultures that continue to link the UK with South Asia.

The people and cultures of South Asia have made a significant impact on Britain with about 1 in every 20 people in the country being of South Asian heritage. Our food, clothing, music, words, and the overall ambiance of our towns and cities all tell of the diversity of Britain.

This year’s concept is 'Stories to Tell' which aims to explore a range of themes, from identity and community to gender, faith, and family. This month, we'll be asking staff and students the question 'What moments in your life have shaped who you are today?' and to share their art, writing, music, fashion, food, and experiences.

Interested in getting involved?

You might be away for the summer but don’t worry! Events are being held all over the UK, so you can celebrate SAHM. From art workshops to festivals to coffee mornings, there’s loads of ways you can embrace the history and identity of the SA community.
