Have you been involved with a society, sports club or media outlet this year? Ready to take a step up? Got what it takes to lead a group?

If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, then you should definitely be nominating yourself for a committee role in the Student Group Elections

What is a committee member?

Committee members are the student leaders of their groups; each committee role is focused on a different aspect of the group's leadership to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Some positions are crucial to the running and leading of a group, some handle the finances, and some spend it!

From personal experience, being a student group committee member is one of the best opportunities, especially when it comes to learning leadership skills and learning how the SU works! Some roles will require more work than others, but everyone is valued equally, and you all have the same goal… wanting the best for your student group.

Don’t be too nervous about starting (or continuing) on your journey as a committee member. The Students’ Union run a week's worth of training sessions during the summer to ensure that you are prepared to hit the ground running when you return in September (just in time for the Freshers' Fair!)

A lot goes on behind the scenes, and if you’re on the fence about nominating yourself talk to your current committee members - no one else can give you better insight into the role than them.

FAQs

Who can run for a position?

Only current Royal Holloway students, who will still be a student in September 2023, can nominate themselves. You must also have an active membership for the group(s) you intend to run for.

What positions can I run for?

Each individual group must have a President, Treasurer and Secretary/Vice President. Otherwise, the group will go dormant… don’t let this happen to your group!

Because of the unique makeup of our clubs and societies, there are far too many positions to list here. Instead, you can find the positions on our website by scrolling to the bottom of your student group webpage and clicking ‘Post list’.

How can I nominate myself?

If you'd like to nominate yourself for a committee position, the first step is to head over to the Student Group Elections page and click ‘Stand’. Then, simply complete the information boxes, and submit your nomination!

There will also be an option to add a photo and a 400-word manifesto. This should outline who you are and why you want to run for this specific committee role.

Who can vote in the elections?

Current Royal Holloway students who hold an active membership for your student group will be eligible to vote for their next committee members.

I'm part of the group but it won’t let me stand in the elections?

Firstly, are you signed into your account?

If you are signed in, it may be because of your membership status. If your group offers termly memberships, and you haven't renewed your membership, you will need to get the term two membership to be an official member!

If you are still having issues standing for your group, don't hesitate to contact the Student Opportunities team.
