Student Insight Report: SU Security

Following feedback from over 1000 students over two academic years, President Maia Jarvis introduces the findings of the SU Security review; outlining key recommendations and what steps the Students' Union is taking as a result of what you told us.

When campaigning to be President in March 2022, I promised I would lead a complete review of SU security and I am absolutely delighted to have worked with students and colleagues across the Union to deliver this aim through a Student Insight Report!

What we learned

This report examines students’ feelings around safety when attending an event at one of our Students’ Union venues, as well as their experiences and perception of the current SU security team for the 2022-23 academic year. We kickstarted this project in last year’s Rate Your Union survey, and over the last two years, we have engaged with students in a variety of ways to gain better insight into your experiences when attending our events and with our security team.

The work we have done on this hugely important element of the student experience has been a collaborative effort across different permanent staff teams within the Students’ Union. We believe the proposed list of recommendations we have compiled will have a positive impact on current and prospective students’ feelings of safety when attending events in our venues as well as with our security team.

What are the next steps?

This Student Insight Report has been shared extensively with the Senior Management Team at the Students’ Union and with relevant members of University staff. Hannah Hockin, SU President-elect, will also be continuing work in this area next year as the Students' Union implements these recommendations across our three venues and with the current security team.

I would like to extend my thanks to all the students who spent their valuable time sharing their feedback and authentic experiences because without their contributions this report would not exist. I think it is truly outstanding that this report captures quantitative and qualitative feedback from 1,249 students over two academic years.

I hope you find this report as insightful and thought-provoking as I did - I am excited to see how we can use its findings to make student life better at Royal Holloway.
