Candidate for NUS Delegate

#HandItToHenn for NUS Delegate:

Covid-19 Recovery: we have spent a long time fighting and crashing down the virus. It’s now time to move our thinking forward to a non-lockdown world. - The government has ignored the needs of students throughout the pandemic. I have welcomed the NUS #StudentsDeserveBetter campaign and supported it from its launch. The NUS has achieved a lot in terms of financial support and rebates, but I hope to see more tackled through this campaign.

Mental Health:  Whether a student has an existing mental health problem, or is just starting to find things difficult, the pandemic has put a huge amount of extra strain on students. Mental health and wellbeing support for students is non-negotiable, this issue isn’t isolated to RHUL. I will vote for Mental Health support and funding for services to be taken very seriously. As VP Wellbeing & Diversity, I have a greater understand of how the mechanisms of support within the University sphere function and want students to have better access to mental health support.

Transgender & GNC Support: Through my work as VP Wellbeing & Diversity I have seen first-hand the lack of understanding with regard to the LBGT+ community but notably Trans and GNC students. I feel this is a Nation-wide issue that requires centralised work from the inside out. Students should not be expected to educate those around them and be subjected to microaggressions such as ‘deadnaming’ whilst studying for a degree. These issues need to be raised and addressed nationally to ensure LGBT+ students are able to enjoy a positive University experience.

Decolonise: The Covid crisis has been created by the same system that created colonialism and racism. A Colonised curriculum is a major contributor to the ‘BAME’ attainment gap. Nationally, ‘BAME’ students are 20% less likely to achieve a 1st / 2:1 degree classification in comparison to their White peers. Academic attainment must not be dependent on ethnicity or fundamentally - ‘Whiteness’ to achieve highly. Amidst all the national and local issues, the main ambition of the National Union of Students is to provide an education that has greater representation of diversity, so that it is reflected in the faculties and curriculum as a whole.

NUS National Policies represent the best interest of all RHUL students and will make sure your views and opinions get heard nationally in order to positively improve your University experience.
