Candidate for School Rep - Humanities

Hi everyone! My name is Jack Masters and I am hoping to continue my role as Humanities Rep for the academic year 23/24.

I’ve really enjoyed this year as your rep, and I hope you have seen some of the changes I’ve tried to implement. I launched the Humanities Instagram account, which is full of careers info and email reminders. I’ve also started to create longer form non-informational posts, like the stories I’m sharing during LGBT history month. This is something I’d love to continue. I’ve run multiple town hall style meetings in the school, and a murder mystery social (with another hopefully coming soon!)

Reading load can be challenging for humanities students, especially when it is particularly complicated, so I’ve been pushing for more structured reading in the form of short videos or questions to focus on. I’ve also been working with staff to help make our seminars more comfortable and friendly spaces. This will foster discussion, and help to lessen anxiety for those with mental health difficulties.

I’m also acutely aware there are many of us who have to work regularly, or commute to university. This is one reason why I am always looking for ways to avoid the pile-up of essay deadlines. There is so much more I’m proud to have achieved this year, but I’m also excited to share my goals for the coming year.

I strongly believe that community is the most important part of a great university experience. Next year I will continue to run events in the school, and keep pushing for cross-departmental events that bring us together. I would also love to promote the currently underused study spaces in the international building. It would be great to see our building alive and full of students.

A big part of making a community is knowing that you are heard, but it can often be hard to see the changes that are being made. I want to dedicate a space on Instagram for sharing the amazing work that your academic reps, myself, and the humanities staff are doing. I will also continue to regularly meet with the course reps, so I can understand the issues which are most important to all students.

That’s far from all I have to say, and all that I am wanting to achieve, but I hope you consider me again for the role of humanities rep.
