Nominations

Lucy Brown

Club: Riding

Lucy Brown is the riding club’s social secretary for the second year running and is fully devoted to the running of the club despite being in the third year of her degree. Lucy was the only committee member with prior committee experience and is always supportive to her other committee members when they come to her to ask for help. As well as being on committee Lucy rides with the club every week and has done this for all three of her years at Royal Holloway. Lucy goes above and beyond to fulfill her role and organises socials to include drinking, non drinking, on and off campus socials to guarantee inclusion of all members. Lucy has also introduced social break weeks where every third week committee and members can catch up on their non-club commitments. Lucy has also passed her union bus test in order to further aid the club in getting all the members to and from club lessons. Lucy is a bubbly personality and welcomes new members into the club and shows continued support to the long term members of the riding club. Lucy has volunteered enough hours to riding to have achieved her gold passport award.

Caitlyn Bush

Club: Netball

  • Caitlyn is a fantastic member and credit to Royal Holloway Netball. Now in her season year, she has shown great commitment and dedication both this year and last at socials, charity events and matches – both on and off court. Last summer she was elected at the end of her first year to be this season’s Social Secretary committee member.
  • Caitlyn is a popular member of the squad and her approachable and fun nature means that she gets on with everyone and works well in a team with committee, coaches and her own team.
  • Caitlyn’s dedication to practicing and improving her play has been inspiring, especially amongst the Freshers who joined the club this year, encouraging them to practice and play to their best ability, as well as her own improvement in moving up a team this season.
  • This year Caitlyn has demonstrated a keen interest in other clubs, both socially and competitively, by organising socials and assisted in the running of charity events in collaboration with other clubs and societies, as well as encouraging the club to support other clubs at their home fixtures. Examples of her work include: the This Girl Can crossover with women’s rugby, the Sport In Mind net-athon in term 1, and joint socials with Women’s rugby, Men’s football and American football and the Lifting society.
  • A key aim of the committee this year was increasing the number of sober socials the club ran. Caitlyn has organised bowling, a trip to Winter Wonderland and team meals after training sessions to increase the inclusivity of the club. Furthermore, Caitlyn has upcoming plans of trips to professional competitive netball matches, and local activities such as Thorpe Park.
  • This encouragement has also resonated with our four teams, often with them going to the gym together, socialising off the court, and going for dinner after matches. This not only increased the community feels of the club as a whole, but also filters down to and improves our match play as teams who know each other well perform better on court.
  • Caitlyn’s impact throughout the club has been gigantic and only continuing to grow. Last season she was voted Fresher of the year at our end of meal awards and biggest personality in our club. These awards have proven that Caitlyn’s character amongst the netball community has been outstanding in terms of her fantastic commitment and dedication.
  • Thus, the netball committee feel strongly that Caitlyn has significantly improved the overall involvement of netball amongst other clubs/societies, having a wide-reaching impact. Caitlyn has an amazing, bubbly and inspiring character which has resonated clearly throughout the sporting community.
  • The Netball Committee would therefore like to nominate Caitlyn Bush for the 2020 Colossus’ Sports Personality of the year award.

Tilly Davies

Club: Polo

Tilly has shown dedication to Polo by competing at the median level this year while being the team captain, and last year was on the committee as secretary. She also competes for RHUL sports like Riding where she is on the A-team, placing frequently. Recently, she was chosen to compete as a GBR Student Rider over Easter 2020. On top of managing these two sports and her degree, she also competes on the RHUL Ballroom and Latin society as a novice and works part-time. Despite all of these stresses and pulls on her time, Tilly remains one of the kindest people I have ever met. If you don’t know her already, I highly suggest just going up and saying hi to her. She will welcome you with the openest arms. After, you will see just how deserving she is of representing not only the university with this award but of the recognition that comes with it.

Tom Hannington

Club: Ultimate Frisbee

Tom (AKA Paddington) has been a massive character in the club for 3 years now. In that time he has managed to gain some recognition across campus from other clubs. Here are some words about Tom from members of our club

  • A welcoming personality and friendly face

  • Big efforts put in to attempt to have collaborative events with other clubs
  • Very good president, gives everyone equal opportunities
  • We love Paddington!
  • Big personality at socials and on a night out

Spirit: Spirit has a significant role in ultimate as there are no referees in the game, all decisions are made between the players in a calm and well spirited manner. The better the spirit the more fluid and sporting the game is.

  • Tom is consistently commended for his spirit in game by other teams
  • Was a key member of the team who won best spirit at UKU mixed indoor regionals
  • Spirit is always high at trainings making new and old players feel welcome

Here are some of the clubs that Tom has fostered relationships with:

It only makes sense to give this award to a real bear. We recommend Paddington

Charlie Jordan

Club: Badminton

This member has shown that it isn’t impossible to pick up a sport in university and be good at it. He has shown tremendous commitment and dedication to the club, not just in the improvement of his skills and technique for the sports, but his soft skills in administrative and volunteering roles for the club.

Commitment

  • Charlie’s journey in the club has been remarkable. He joined the club as a Development team member three years ago (2017). Never missed a session, he continuously improved his game and managed to get onto the Men’s 2nd team the following year (2018). He started the year playing as the Second Doubles pair and ended it as First Doubles pair, raking in 13 wins out of 14 matches (93%) out of 7 fixtures for the Men’s 2nd. That year, Charlie also served his club as an ever-ready substitute filling in for unavailable 1st Team members. He then went on to be selected for the Men’s 1st Team this year (2019), solidifying his place as Second Doubles pair week in-week out, and the rest was history.

Outreach

  • Charlie is also jointly responsible for setting up and running @rhbadminton on Instagram and Facebook this year. As Publicity Officer of the team, he was always keen to promote the successes of our teams and clubs and took initiatives to share and to raise awareness of various charities and other important events by fellow sports clubs of the RH. A very impactful contribution to the sport and society as a backroom-staff.

Volunteering

  • He champions volunteering for RH Badminton, with a total of more than 120 hours under his belt, including coaching local primary school children and contributing to the community sports days for ActiveSurrey. He also runs the Badminton Be-Active sessions for RH Sports 3 times a week, making sure that every student gets a chance to play. Charlie’s motivation to give back to the sports is exemplary, and his selflessness should be commended, as he is always among the first to sign up to volunteering events organised by the club, contributing his time and effort for charity, such as Fund-Raising and Love in a Box.

Impact on the team

  • Charlie always turns up to training with a smile on his face and his positive attitude towards the club creates a good atmosphere for everyone, especially for the new members at the start of each term. He makes sure that new members feel welcome in the club, as team bonding is very important to him and the club in general. As the volunteer in the Be-Active sessions, he is happy to talk with anyone in the wider Royal Holloway community about any of the problems they have with the sessions, or even providing coaching if they want it.

Emily Romabiles

Club: Mixed Martial Arts

Achievements

  • Emily has a warm and welcoming presence in the club, which makes her easily approachable and well-liked by the members.
  • She has ensured newer and anxious members are comfortable, by willingly seeking to help explain difficult techniques to them and offering a listening ear.
  • Emily has dedicated her personal time to making the effective personal touches of the club working with our President details to create stickers to hand out at freshers fair and to new members as well as a new banner.
  • Emily worked effectively with our President to rebrand the clubs’ social media and has since posted high quality events and media to promote the club and keep good contact with members.
  • Emily ensure all the social media accounts met with the SU’s regulations.
  • Emily has created end of term questionnaire so the club can reflect and improve constantly
  • Emily has taken strides to demonstrate bravery, compassion, and confidence since being on committee. Flourishing herself and in turn helping those around her to do the same Events and Collaboration

  • She catered to the masses ensuring there is something appropriate for everyone to get involved in. • Emily has welcomed the club into her home for a setting for socials
  • Emily has played an instrumental role in organising collaborative events with our committee and other student groups.
  • For Female is Fierce she organised a MMA training session with Women’s Football which was a huge success and had a high turnout.
  • For This Girl Can Week she organised a successful collaboration with MMA, Feminism Society and Cheer.
  • Emily has also utilised her JKD Martial Art knowledge to teach at our collaborative sessions.

TJ Sullivan

Club: Hockey

Tj has become a huge presence in the RHUL Sport community over the last 3 years, from joining the Hockey Club in her second year, serving as the Club’s first Media Secretary in third year, and finally taking on the enormous responsibility of President as a Masters student. She is frequently spotted in and around the sports centre on match days, not only supporting other clubs, but committing her time not just to her own team, but to others where possible. She has tirelessly worked to improve the club over the last 2 years on committee, raising the profile of the club across social media platforms, promoting all of the club’s hard work both on the pitch in fixtures, and off the pitch with charity fundraising. Her work as President has seen the introduction of feedback forms, helping club members anonymously raise any concerns to committee, which has especially been beneficial to those who feel less confident to raise issues. Tj has always had the wellbeing of our club members at heart. She has consistently driven for greater consideration of mental health wellbeing within the club, and is currently in the process of integrating a mental health focused element to existing committee roles for the upcoming academic year. Tj is one of the most welcoming, approachable, and heartwarming individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working alongside with, not just as her club secretary, but as her teammate. In my mind, no one deserves this award more than Tj.

Alex Winch

Club: Men's Football

There are very few bigger personalities in the Royal Holloway Sport community than Alex Winch. He is a constant feature at the sports centre no matter the sport. In his role as secretary of Men’s Football this year he has increased inclusivity in the club as well as helping launch many fundraising and awareness campaigns. If you ask most clubs on campus to name somebody from Men’s Football, the first name they would say would be Alex. He is the first to put himself forward to help with other club’s charity events and support any Holloway team no matter the weather. He has participated in many charity events including Strictly Come Holloway, Netball’s Net-athon and helped organise the collaboration between the SU and Men’s Football giving out free hugs in the library. He will also go out of his way to support other Holloway teams, often spotted in the pouring rain supporting the Bears! Alex is also a constant feature in the social scene as well, always attending socials as well as being found in his second home, the SU. We believe that he should be nominated for Sports Personality of the Year not only for his infectious personality or the impact he has had on Men’s Football this year but rather the impact he has had on sport and the university community as a whole.
