Roots and Routes: Gospel Choir Showcase

Gospel Music is rich in its ability to express lived experiences of struggle and strength and hope in God, from slavery to the present day, this event will showcase both the origin and journey of gospel music— from the harmonious congregation of transatlantic slaves to the legendary legacies of Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and even Elvis. Using contemporary UK gospel artists to embrace those who steps they followed will not only encourage others to remember the importance of history, but also the solidarity we find in praise and worship to God as black people.

The celebratory concert will involve performances by renowned gospel singers/rappers/choirs/groups/musicians from around the country. This will be weaved in with informative presentations/clips of African-American history which will draw the relationship between religion, slavery and identity to ultimately outline the origins of gospel music.
