Like all of Noel Coward’s plays, ‘The Vortex’ unapologetically emphasises class and sophistication, yet it is his most grounded and gritty work. The play explores the insecurities of a wealthy woman and her ageing beauty, the troubled relationship with her adult son, and drug abuse in English High Society circles after the First World war.
