RHSU have been working with students and employees to co-create our first EDI Framework we will be launching the Framework in the Events Spaces in EWD building on 15 May come by to hear all about it!

We cannot make student life better here at Royal Holloway without having EDI at the heart of everything we do. The RHSU framework sets out our aims and objectives, our action plan, and how we will be accountable. The RHSU framework establishes our commitment to our students, our employees, and our responsibilities, allowing us to hold our employees and university staff accountable for embracing EDI through educating our employees, empowering our student leaders, and influencing positive change.

We want to make it clear that EDI is a priority for us. While developing this framework, we identified areas where we are doing well and areas where we need to improve. This framework will ensure that the whole of RHSU is being proactive in their approach to EDI, to build an inclusive community for employees and students.

Across the UK, thousands of students are caring for someone at home - yet data shows they remain one of the most invisible and underserved groups in higher education. Nearly one in twenty applicants now enters university with caring responsibilities, but acceptance rates have fallen sharply, the academic impact is profound and almost half consider leaving their course altogether. Caring doesn’t stop when university starts.

But increasing awareness creates a powerful opportunity: for universities to design systems, cultures and support structures that genuinely reflect the realities of student carers and give them every chance to succeed.

Against this backdrop, we’re delighted to share that the RHUL Staff Parents & Carers Network is teaming up with the Students’ Union Parents & Carers Student Community to host a special Student Carer Wellbeing Event on Thursday 4 June 2026 at 10am. This collaborative effort brings together students, colleagues, wellbeing specialists and local partners to shine a spotlight on the experiences of student carers and student parents, and to create space for connection, reflection and wellbeing across our community.

Why this event matters

Student carers and student parents often balance multiple responsibilities, pressures and identities, and many do so quietly, without always being visible in everyday university life. This event aims to:

Highlight lived experiences of student carers and parents.
Promote wellbeing and mental health.
Build connection between colleagues and students with caring responsibilities.
Create an inclusive, supportive campus activity open to all.
Offer a visible, accessible and welcoming way to engage with wellbeing on campus.

A community-wide collaboration

The event has been shaped through contributions across our RHUL community, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting student and staff carers. This collective effort highlights the power of working together to create environments where carers feel seen, supported and connected.

What to expect

The event combines short talks, a gentle campus walk and an optional social moment afterwards offering multiple ways to take part based on individual preference and comfort.

Programme:

Opening remarks – Nick Barratt, Senior RHUL Parents & Carers Sponsor.
Guest speaker – Katherine Allen (Campus to Campus).
Student voice – Jude Curtis, Parents & Carers Community Officer, Students’ Union.

We are also pleased to welcome colleagues from Royal Holloway’s Wellbeing Team, the Health & Lifestyle Team, Action for Carers (Surrey) and colleagues and students from across our community.

Following the talks we’ll take a 25-minute inclusive campus walk, designed to be gentle, accessible and social. For those who prefer not to walk, a stay and social option with light wellbeing activities will be available.

We’ll close with refreshments (and hopefully ice cream).

Students - £6 advance / £8 on the door

Guests - £14 advance only (no guest tickets available on the door). Tickets sold as a £14 'student + guest' ticket that must be bought through a student account.

Advance tickets will be available to purchase online until 8pm on the night of the event.

Bringing guests to the SU

Current Royal Holloway students are permitted to bring one guest to SU Venue events. These tickets must be purchased in advance of the event and you will need to sign in your guest on the door from 10pm.

Your guest will need to arrive with you at the event and bring their own photographic proof of age ID. It’s also important to be aware that you are responsible for your guest's behaviour while they are in the venue and may be given a sanction should they break the code of conduct.

Admission

Tickets will guarantee you entry to the event until 11pm, after this time entry will be dependent on venue capacity until last entry at midnight.

Identification

E-tickets are your ticket to the event and you'll need to have this with you to get into the venue. If you have purchased a student ticket, we may ask to see your Student ID Card*.

Alongside this, you'll need to bring a physical proof of age document (driving licence, passport, PASS card, YOTI app) that is photographic (includes an image of yourself) which will be cross-referenced against your enrolment information. This can NOT be an image of the document, it must be the document itself.

*It’s a requirement to have your Student ID Card with you when you attend Students’ Union events and we’ll ask to see this when you enter our venues. However, during the first two weeks of term, we know that the process and production of Student ID Cards can take time which may mean you don’t have yours for the start of Freshers’ Festival.

Until Friday 4 October, we will accept a couple of alternatives that prove your student status: Proof of enrolment by producing your Campus Connect Profile on your phone or an official Royal Holloway letter which shows your Student ID Card Number and full name.

Event tickets

When you purchase a ticket, you'll receive two emails. The first is your receipt of payment - we won't need to see this but you may wish to keep it as it includes your reference number. Your e-ticket will follow as a PDF in a separate email - you'll need to show us this on the door so we can scan you in. We advise you to lock your screen in portrait mode and turn up the brightness to make scanning easier. If you don't have access to a mobile device, we kindly ask that you print your e-ticket.

All sales are final, and refunds are not available on tickets once they have been purchased (including duplicates or purchases made in error, tickets bought for the wrong event or non-attendance due to personal choice, illness or injury).

Transfers

Your student Student ID Card and tickets are not transferrable – i.e. you cannot lend it to anyone else to get into the venue.

As your Students' Union, we're keen to promote equality of opportunity for people with disabilities and to take the necessary steps to meet their requirements - that's why we've ensured that everything we do is accessible to as many of you as possible.
