Bear And Proud

Throughout February, we’re celebrating LGBT+ History Month, with the theme being #BearandProud. We want to celebrate the pride surrounding LGBT+ identities at Royal Holloway by coupling it with our campus pride! We want to know what makes you proud to be LGBT+ or why you’re an ally. Tag your photos with #BearAndProud or use the Twibbon to tell us why you’re proud! We’ll be sharing stories throughout the month, so get in touch if you want to be heard.

Events

All month we’ll be holding loads of cool events for you to get involved in. Whether you want to send your MP a Valentine’s Day card calling for LGBT+ inclusive and compulsory Sex and Relationships Education, or want to hear more about being LGBT+ around the world, or even want to come along to a movie screening or two, there’s something for you.

Tomorrow it’s the LGBT+ Society’s infamous fetish themed Risqué Rainbow Rave. Expect lots of glow sticks and glitter and we’ll giving away free condoms! You can also get involved with the Stonewall Rainbow Laces campaign by buying some laces from the SU Helpdesk.

Pride

With pride in mind, a cohort of LGBTQ+ students will be attending National Student Pride over the weekend of the 24 February, with this year’s theme being Sex and Sexual Health Education, something that is dangerously lacking for young LGBT+ people not only in this country, but all over the world.

Throughout the month, we’ll also be holding Liberation in Sport workshops, where your club can learn more about LGBT+ identities and how to be an ally. Email me to sign up.

With the double entendre about bears aside, the message of pride is incredibly important, especially when there is still so much LGBT+ phobia in the world. This campaign not only encourages us to be proud to be LGBT+ and proud allies, but also to be proud of being LGBT+ at Royal Holloway. Being a #BearAndProud is a huge part of our Royal Holloway identity, so why not celebrate with us this LGBT+ History Month?
