Blog: Representing All Of You

There’s a lot of you studying here, and we try our hardest to make sure all students’ voices are heard at Royal Holloway. However, we’re well aware that this doesn’t always happen effectively, and we’re going to do something about that.

There are a lot of you studying here, and we try our hardest to make sure all students’ voices are heard at Royal Holloway. However, we’re well aware that this doesn’t always happen effectively, and we’re going to do something about that.

We’re always learning and striving to amplify the voices of students who are often underrepresented, which is why I am really excited to be taking part in leading some national research into inclusive student engagement, with a focus on supporting and empowering students of colour.

The College has a diverse student body, with a third of students classified as Black and Minority Ethnicity so it makes sense for us to understand how to better support students of all backgrounds to excel in their studies.

Clem Jones, Vice President Education and President-elect, is also on board. One of his main priorities from July will be lobbying the College to ensure it is both maximising its efforts to tackle the Black and Minority Ethnicity attainment gap and actively working to improve the overall experience of students of colour at our University.

About time! What’s happening?

The Student Engagement Partnership (TSEP) work in conjunction with the National Union of Students (NUS) focusing solely on, you guessed it, student engagement. They have commissioned this research project, titled 'Inclusive Student Engagement', which will run for ten months, with an option to extend it for another year. The SU has applied, and been accepted, to play a key role in this research project and we’ll make sure we keep you informed of progress along the way.

What’s the plan?

I will attend an introductory event with TSEP to get a few more details in June - after this we’ll be putting our research plan and framework together over the summer, ready for the new academic year.

How can I get involved?

We are planning on making this a student-led project, so there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved. We’ll make you aware of these in the new academic year and keep you in the loop with any developments as we carry out this research.

If you have any questions in the mean time, please don’t hesitate to email me or connect with me on Facebook.
