The event of the year for societies, media outlets and RAG is almost upon us! Tickets have SOLD OUT and we’ll be joined by over 550 students across 90 societies and three media outlets to celebrate an amazing year for Student Activities. I love this event because it gives us a chance to reward and recognise those individuals and groups for their outstanding hard work throughout the year and the achievements they have made. Plus it’s an excuse to have a fancy dinner, dress up and dance the night away!

This year has been one of the most successful so far, with over 3100 students signed up to Student Activities, almost £30,000 raised for charity through RAG and more opportunities for volunteering and employability events than ever, and we couldn’t have done it without the groups below.

We aren’t only recognising your groups on the night but also those individuals who have gone above and beyond for their societies and media outlets. On the night we will be awarding eight first years with Freshman of the Year for their outstanding contribution since the word go, 20 individuals with Crests for their overall dedication to their group and nine individuals involved in student media for their talent and innovation over the past year.

Not to mention our big awards of the night and the following groups are up for nominations for these prestigious awards: Outstanding Contribution to RAG, RAG Society of the Year, Skills and Employability Cup, Community Shield, Most Improved, Best Event, Co-President’s Cup and Society of the Year. On top of these, this year we are also really proud to announce a brand new award at Socs Ball: the Lenny Henry Inclusion & Accessibility Shield, which is awarded to a group who champions inclusivity and accessibility within their society or media outlet, through innovative campaigns and dedication to a cause. We are very excited to annouce that Lenny Henry, actor and comedian who founded Comic Relief, is delighted to have the award named after him and we hope to have involved in the award ceremony itself in the years to come.

The award has been created by students over the last couple of years and really demonstrates how equality and diversity is high on the agenda at Royal Holloway. When I was chatting to Jack Kilker, our Co-President Welfare and Diversity about the award he said: “I’m really happy that we’ve been able to create this award and get so much student buy-in so far. It’s fantastic to be able to reward student groups who’ve gone above and beyond to make sure all of their members feel recognised, welcomed and empowered within their group.”

I can’t wait for Saturday to celebrate this momentous occasion with you all and look forward to attending my fifth and final Socs Ball. Good luck to everyone on the night, the decisions for awards were particularly difficult this year and if I could I’d give you all an award!

I hope you all have an enjoyable and memorable evening and I’ll see you on the dance floor after my speeches are done!
