Get That Dream Graduate Role

With the launch of Employability Week here are some useful tips to acquiring that desired graduate scheme/job.

Graduate schemes and jobs are seen as a great opportunity by most students to move on to the next stage in their post-university lives. While this is true for a lot of graduates it's perfectly normal to feel anxious about the near future and in particular your employability prospects. With the launch of Employability Week we've pulled together our top tips when it comes to landing that elusive grad scheme.

Apply early

Fancy the look of a graduate scheme? You need to be on your toes as most companies open their application periods around September to January. Make sure you check out job sites such as jobs.ac.uk that list graudate scheme positions. It's highly recommended that you begin applying early so that you can make time to finish your university work. You wouldn’t want to succumb to the unrelenting nature of essays and job application deadlines.

Make applications to your least favourite schemes/jobs first

This may sound like a weird tip but there are reasons to it! It is likely that you will make numerous applications to a variety of jobs and schemes and most of them will ask you to answer difficult questions, such as summing yourself up in fewer than 150 words. By applying to your least favourite jobs first, this allows you to hone your application skills as you move towards the schemes you really want. By the time you make your last application, you will have full mastery in presenting yourself in the best light - just remember the first tip and don't miss the deadlines!

Utilise the Careers and Employability Service

The University’s Careers Service harbours experienced job gurus, who are subject matter expert when it comes to what employers want out of graduates when they apply. They know the methods to formulating an eye-catching CV along with the best techniques to impress interviewers. Don’t miss out on their advice, if you have any queries or want your CV to be looked over, they're probably the best bet to getting professional counselling.

We also have a Speed Mock Interview session as part of Employability Week. Pop in for a five minute interview with common questions and get on the spot feedback.

It’s not all about your degree

While it is great to get that all-important first or upper second-class honours degree when you graduate, employers want a candidate who is also well rounded in all aspects of their university career. Showcase all the extra-curricular activities you’ve taken part in, whether it be as part of a sports club or as an academic course rep for your department; every little detail counts!
