Blog: #HealthyU - What Do We Really Mean By Exercise?

This week we are encouraging you to get active and take advantage of all the great opportunities we have on campus to get you exercising. But what does this really mean? Some of you might be thinking we want you to go and spend an hour on the treadmill or play a competitive game of football or netball. If that’s your thing that's great! But we want you to know that getting active isn’t just about sport and intense workouts. There is plenty you can do to make those small changes to your everyday routine and reap the benefits.

The simplest thing you can do is walk. One of the events we are running this week is our Super Steps Challenge. All you have to do is download a fitness app on your phone (like Fitbit or Moves) and get walking! Sounds easy right? Well it is a challenge, so we want you to do 10,000 steps from Monday to Friday this week.

Once you’ve done your 10,000 steps tweet us with a screenshot of the evidence using #HealthyU. All those who complete their 10,000 steps each day from Monday to Friday will be entered into a prize draw to win a Fitbit Flex worth £80! Want some inspiration to rack up those steps? Why not take a walk around our lovely campus using our brand new walking routes. The walks take between 10 and 30 minutes and are a great way to get out of the library and explore parts of campus you wouldn’t normally venture to. All you have to do is click on one of the four walking routes on your phone and follow the route to an active lifestyle!
