Elections Nominations: Why You Should Run

Thinking about whether you should nominate yourself to run this election season? Well we’ve got a few reasons on why you should!

Nominations for the SU Elections have been open for just under a week. Maybe you’ve been thinking about whether you should nominate yourself to run but you’re not sure about the whole thing. Well we’ve got a few reasons on why you should put yourself forward and run for one of the positions this election season.

Contribute and Influence

Being a sabbatical officer gives you the platform to contribute and influence the university’s strategy, both through committee activity and more informal meetings with key staff, ensuring student interests are effectively represented.

Five Different Officer Roles

There’s more than one position up for election – in fact this year a new officer role is being elected for the first time - Vice-President Education - which means there will be five officers working together and representing the views of students.

Maybe you feel that running the whole show as President is not for you. But instead your passion lies in representing societies, well then why not put yourself forward to run for Vice-President Societies and Media. If you want to drive forward education standards at the College, put yourself forward for the new role of Vice-President Education

Full-Time Paid Role

It’s an actual paid job with all five officer roles full-time positions with a salary, benefits package and holidays. You’ll be working in the Students' Union's open plan office alongside full-time permanent members of staff who are on hand to support you in your role. Oh, and don't overlook how impressive being a trustee of a multi-million pound charity will look on your CV. These roles will give you vital work experience, which could be key in landing that dream role in the future.

You can find more information on all of the positions up for election, in our Standing Guide.

Attend High Level Meetings and Run Campaigns

As an officer you sit on the Students' Union's Board of Trustees overseeing the strategic direction, financial stability and legal obligations of the organisation.

You also run campaigns based on your manifesto while leading and facilitating student engagement with committees and councils. Furthermore you’ll be providing support and helping to organise student campaigns on campus!

Not Just Any Job

This is one of the most rewarding graduate roles you can get, one like no other. You’ll be working on different projects and campaigns every week. Forget your bog standard, boring nine to five office job!

You’ll get out and about, meet students, attend and chair meetings, attend national conferences, and write articles on the issues most important to you! This job allows you to make a noticeable change, and help improve students’ experience during their time at Royal Holloway.

So what are you waiting for? The time to put your name forward is now! Head over to the SU Elections website - nominations are open till 22 February.
