On 31 October, we have a plethora of standout fixtures which we will be spotlighting for close attention, with some additional focus on some of our star players. Your VP Sport, Dom Brown, tells us why it's one of our most important fixtures dates and calls for you come down and support all our sports clubs.

For the avid sports player and supporter, Wednesday afternoons at Royal Holloway cannot come soon enough, as you rush down to the sports centre for a home or away game with your team mates and represent the Bears in fine fashion. At the Students’ Union and Royal Holloway Sport, we love hearing about what you are getting up to and seeing the high level of quality that is produced week in, week out.

We shout about it as much as we can, but on 31 October, for Big Bears Wednesday, we want everything to be about you! We will be promoting, covering and supporting our clubs even more than we usually do. We want to feel the hype around campus not just for those teams playing at home, but also ones playing away who are just as important.

Why This Wednesday?

On 31 October, we have a plethora of standout fixtures which we will be spotlighting for close attention, with some additional focus on some of our star players. Our main sporting venues such as the sports hall, MY courts, Nobles, 3G, Eastfields and the astro are all in use, so there will be a fantastic hub and atmosphere for all to enjoy.

The Men’s Rugby first and second teams will be looking to follow on from the fantastic home display from the women’s team last week, as they play consecutively on the 3G against Reading and Surrey respectively. The astro will be packed full of Hockey action with three teams taking to the pitch between 1pm and 5pm.

Two Football games from the Men’s and Women’s first teams, as well as two Lacrosse matches from the two women’s teams, will take place on Nobles and Eastfields. Tennis, Netball and Squash are all also in action and if that isn’t enough, the sports hall is a hub of fantastic sporting action with Fencing, Badminton and Basketball all having fixtures between 1pm and 7pm.

We are also aware that there are many teams playing away from home, and we still want updates coming in – please tag @surhul and @rhulsport on Instagram so that we can let everyone know how you are getting on!

What We Want From You

We want you to help us help you! Spread the word to your team mates, house mates, flat mates, course mates and other friends. Get them down to the sports centre to soak up the atmosphere and support you in your match. Shout about the event as much as you can, create events, share our posts and use your social media accounts in the most effective way you can. We want the focus to be on you. We will be filming on the day, as well as having an SU photographer that you would usually see on nights out. We may even have themed face paint and coloured ribbons to wear as a team and squad to your fixtures and play in matches.

Even if your match is on early at 1pm, or late at 7pm, it would be great if before or after your fixture you and your squad came down to support another team that is playing. It is amazing seeing our Bears support each other so let’s make it happen more often. One of the perks of my job is that I have already been able to watch such a variety of sports in just two weeks of fixtures! If I haven’t been to watch you yet then don’t worry - I will get there!

Like I said, this event is all about you, so let’s spend the next week working together to raise awareness about sport on campus and create an amazing atmosphere down at the sports centre. Just think about how much better it is when you have spectators watching you play!

BUCS Round Up - 24/10/18

Week three of fixtures provided some fantastic results home and away for Holloway. Women’s Volleyball secured a victory against rivals Surrey in a closely contested 3-2. Hockey and Lacrosse both brought home the win against Brunel and Chichester respectively, whilst women’s rugby continue their fine form with another victory.

The standout fixture was easily the men’s Basketball first team who managed to win their game 75-74 against Surrey first team, this is an outstanding result for the boys and sets up the Varsity visit in March fantastically. Once again, well done everyone who competed this week and we look forward to competitions that our non BUCS clubs are competing in! For the full list of results, click below.
