If your landlord or estate agent has given you trouble and you’re still owed your deposit or have been charged unfairly, you might still be able to do something about it!
Great news, you can still get your deposit back as long as it’s been less than three months since your tenancy ended. If it’s been over three months, then you won’t be able to get your deposit back, but you can still report them and leave reviews. Just ask for a housing appointment and we’ll guide you from there. You can read one of our success stories here to see how the Advice Centre has helped other students.
Make sure you get in touch with us if you think you’ve been unfairly charged. However, for future reference, speak to the Advice Centre a month before your check-out date and ask for the latest version of the Leaving Guide, which will help you through every step of the way.
It’s really important that every student is aware of who they’re dealing with when they sign a contract, so it would be great if you could find the agency that has caused you trouble online and leave a review on their page. Hopefully this will help a lot of other students with the same problems.
That’s fantastic! Please also share your positive experiences with us. We want to promote good landlords and make sure they stick around. If you had a good landlord, you can encourage them to use the Students’ Union’s very own housing portal HouseSearch, where students can easily find them.
We are starting to build a database of landlords and agents so that when you use our free contract checking service, we can warn you if we spot a dodgy landlord - the more you share with us, the better our database will be at helping other students.
If you've already looked through our web pages and you can't find the information you're after, or if you'd prefer to discuss something face-to-face, it's easy to book an appointment.
