Housing Advice For Christmas

Christmas holidays are right around the corner and we are all incredibly excited! Before you leave, we would like to advise you on a couple of things to consider for taking care of your house while you’re gone.

How do I look after my house?

If you are leaving your home empty over the Christmas holidays, remember to let your landlord or agency know. If you have a friend staying behind during the holidays, leave a key with them to check in on the house and remember to leave all doors and windows locked before you leave.  Bear in mind that over the holidays, student houses can become targets for burglaries.

What do I do about the heating?

Remember to leave your heating on the lowest/frost setting while you’re gone. Even though you will have to pay for the energy used, it will prevent the water from freezing in the pipes, which can cause them to burst when it melts back down, flooding your home. It is your responsibility as a tenant to make sure this doesn’t happen; you will be required to pay the cost of the repairs if it does!

How can I speak to the Advice Centre during the holiday?

The Advice Centre will be closed from Monday 17 December and reopens on Thursday 3 January. If you need urgent housing advice during this time, you can do so by contacting Shelter.

Don’t forget that not everyone can go back to their family for Christmas. Look out for one another and invite people to join you if possible!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us. Enjoy your holidays!

‘Tis the season to grab free essentials!

As term is ending and student loans are spent and gone, don’t forget that the Advice Centre has free sanitary products and condoms to get you through the holidays.  Make sure you pop over to the Advice Centre waiting room and pick up what you need.
