If you’ve been having a look around our website, you may have noticed a new addition at the top of the page. We have installed Recite Me, an accessibility and language toolbar that will help make our website accessible and inclusive for as many people as possible.

It will help the one in five people in the UK who have a disability, including those with common conditions like sight loss and dyslexia, to view and navigate our website in the way that suits them best.

It also meets the needs of the one in ten people in the UK who don’t speak English as their first language, by being able to translate our web content into multiple languages including Chinese, French, German, and Spanish.

We caught up with VP Wellbeing & Diversity Henn Warwick regarding the news:

“I am thrilled to see the introduction of Recite Me onto the SU website. To me, accessibility is of paramount importance.

“As someone who has dyslexia, I have faced challenges throughout my life when it comes to comprehension and reading speed.

“Assistive technology such as Recite Me is incredibly valuable as it allows students to navigate our content without having to purchase their own assistive technology.

“Moreover, it gives students the opportunity to find what works for them as various colours and fonts are included.

“Not only will Recite Me assist students with various disabilities, it also enables students to translate our content into multiple languages which promotes inclusivity.”

How do I access the Recite Me toolbar?

You can open the Recite Me language and accessibility toolbar by clicking on the ‘Accessibility Tools’ button which now appears in the top right on every page of our website.

After you click on the button, the Recite Me toolbar opens and displays a range of different options for customising how the website looks and how you can access the content.

How does Recite Me help me access this website?

Recite Me helps people to access our website to do the things they need to do, like find information about how to access our services, view our events programme, and read our latest news articles.

The Recite Me toolbar has a unique range of functions. You can use it to:

  • Have the text on our website read aloud (including PDFs)
  • Download the text as an MP3 file to play it where and when it suits you
  • Change font sizes and colours
  • Customise background colour
  • Translate text into more than 100 different languages
  • Access a fully integrated dictionary and thesaurus
