Blog: Royal Holloway Athletics At The 2017 London Indoor Championships

On 25/11, Royal Holloway Athletics sent 5 competitors to Lee Valley for the 2017 London Indoor Championships. Hoping to improve from a medal last year, the team was optimistic with first seeds in the women's 200m for Martina Parise and in the men's 3000m for Reuben Hoyte. Anastasia Stone competed in the 400m, and Adam Owen and Tom Sanders in the 200m.

The Results

The day began with great efforts by Anastasia in the 400m with a personal best of 80.86 and Martina, jumping 3.87m in the LJ. Heats in the 60m followed from Martina (8.72s), Tom (7.44s) and Adam (9.84s) who was the only T35 classified athlete in the field.

In the 200m Martina ran 29.61s, Adam 34.81s and Tom 23.59s, winning his heat and qualifying for the final. In the final, Tom's efforts of 23.65s secured a Bronze medal, adding to his Silver from the year before and Gold in the 2017 LUCA Outdoor Series.

The last individual race of the day, the 3000m, was worth the wait. Despite a competitive field, Reuben looked to add another medal to RH's tally, with only 15 laps between him and the podium.

After 3 laps, four athletes broke off the front of the pack, Reuben leading, and would continue to push each other until the finish. With only 600m to go Reuben began his sprint finish, but the rest followed and Reuben's efforts saw him take a 4th finishing at 9:18.7.

Overall, UCL won the David Morgan cup with a margin of 5 points over King’s and 6 points over Imperial for the third time in a row. They also won the University of London Intercollegiate championship. The competition also included the 150th Anniversary of the UH Shield with St George’s winning the trophy. Royal Holloway came 9th overall, an impressive achievement, despite fielding far fewer athletes than other universities.

We look forward to our next major competition which will be BUCS XC on 3/2/18!
