Statement on Flawless, Holi Fest and ACS Collaboration

This week it has become apparent that a serious breakdown in communication around an event has taken place between ACS, Holi Fest organisers, and the Students' Union.

Throughout the course of the academic year, the Students’ Union works closely with a wide range of sports clubs and societies to deliver ‘takeover’ events that celebrate their role on campus. One of these long running collaborations has been the work we have done with the African Caribbean Society (ACS) on our Flawless event nights.

This week it has become apparent that a serious breakdown in communication around these events has taken place between the society and the Students' Union. In particular, it is clear that we have got some things around this Wednesday’s Flawless wrong.

We hold out hands up that the level of service delivered in this instance is below that expected by our members and we wholeheartedly apologise for any offence that has been caused by this and we’re doing everything we can to rectify this.

We are meeting ACS tomorrow to discuss the issue in detail and how we can move forward towards a resolution.

The decision to have this week’s Flawless as a celebration of Holi was based on the understanding that the annual Holi on the Field event had been rescheduled to take place this week following the postponement of last week’s event due to the severe weather.

In fact, Holi on the Field will now take place on 14 March and, after meeting with Hindu Soc today, we have agreed that next Wednesday the society will take over Medicine for the evening. With this in mind, we have moved to remove all branding relating to this Wednesday’s Flawless as Holi from both our digital and print materials.

As a Students’ Union, we believe that our members should feel able to criticise when we have got something wrong and this is one of those occasions where we accept that we should have done better.

If you have any questions at all please do get in contact by emailing us at students.union@su.rhul.ac.uk.

Sincerely,

Tasha Barrett
Students’ Union President
