It is one of our requirements that all permanent staff complete compulsory online training in the following modules within the first week of starting work with us:

  • Manual Handling
  • General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
  • Unconscious Bias

The above training is provided by an online Health & Safety provider called iHasco but it is administered in house by our HR team.

You will receive an email from iHasco with links to the training. Please make sure you set aside an hour for each training where you can work through it undisturbed. Once you’ve completed it the HR team will receive a notification. If you don’t complete it, you will be sent a chasing email from HR and your line manager will be having a word, so please make sure you complete these within your first few days of employment.

If you don’t receive an email from iHasco within your first week of employment, please follow up with the HR team.

Some permanent staff will be required to undertake other compulsory health & safety training. This very much depends on the requirements of your role but could include:

  • Risk Assessment
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH)
  • Working from Heights

Your line manager will identify the specific training you are required to undertake and will make the necessary arrangements with the HR team.

The University offers a wide range of training courses throughout the year which are aimed at assisting the development of commonly required skills in the workplace. Examples of the types of training on offer are ‘Effective 121s’, ‘Report Writing’, and ‘Customer Service Skills’ to name just a few.

These training courses are free to our permanent staff so please take the time to have a look at what’s on offer and take advantage of the opportunity.

If you are interested in attending a particular training course, you should first have a conversation with your line manager to make sure they’re in agreement, then book onto the course using the link provided within the course details. You will receive a confirmation of your place from the University’s Organisational Development Team.

Please make sure you diarise the appointment and turn up on the day. If you need to cancel your place for any reason, please make sure you email the Organisational Development team well in advance so they can offer your place out to someone else.

You should familiarise yourself with the organisation’s Training & Development Policy & Procedure below, to help you understand how training needs may be identified and how funding principles are applied to ensure transparency and consistency across the organisation.

We are keen to support every staff member’s personal development and ask your line manager to ensure discussions take place within your annual Appraisal meeting (between July and September) regarding any specific requirements.

It can be very easy to fall into the trap of thinking that all personal development needs require a training course but often this isn’t true. There are lots of alternatives that may suit your needs better; for example, job shadowing, having a mentor, becoming a Trustee.

Where it is identified that the most suitable option is to attend a course (online or in person) then you should first seek your line manager’s agreement in principle. You should complete the Training Request Form below, which will help aid this discussion.

Your line manager will then discuss this with their respective senior manager to determine if there is budget available.
