Please outline why you’re running for the position, and any skills/experience you possess which would enable you to be successful if elected:
Hey there, I’m Delilah! I am running for VP Wellbeing and Diversity to create a safer, healthier, and happier campus.
I’m an MMus student, Community Officer, School Rep, student ambassador, and society president. I am passionate about welfare, bridging the gap between students and staff, and building community.
I have worked in higher-education student welfare for 6 years, at Royal Holloway and Durham University. These roles – including a helpline volunteer, welfare and inclusion officer, and mental health lead – have given me extensive experience and training in supporting student welfare and facilitating a diverse and inclusive university experience.
My undergrad years were the hardest of my life, and I am dedicated to giving others a better university experience. Having been an undergrad/postgrad, commuter/living in halls, student/teacher, I’ve seen both sides and will support you no matter what. Vote for me, and I’ll always fight your corner. #DelilahGetsItDone!!
Outline your top 8 priorities in ranking order:
- Improve security and safety in the wider area in and around the Egham campus.
- Improve communication and access to University professional support services.
- Increase student involvement in Students’ Union decision-making and planning.
- Improved support around extenuating circumstances and assessments.
- Standardize marking criteria and feedback within departments.
- Improve personal tutor support.
- Improve University and departmental communications with students.
- Improve the clarity and transparency of communications around SU events, activities, services and decision-making.
For your top 3 priorities, identify 1 or 2 actions you would achieve to address the issue:
-
Improve security and safety in the wider area in and around the Egham campus.
Safety always comes first, and it evidently needs prioritising around our campus. No-one – commuter or local – should feel unsafe getting home. Rather than kicking a dead horse with the back gate issue, I am dedicated to realistic and lasting change by:
• Working with the local community to improve pavements and accessibility around Egham.
• Improving the lighting on routes to and from campus.
• Trialling a “night bus” service from campus to station on SU nights.
-
Improve communication and access to University professional support services.
Every student deserves accessible support. No matter how good the support is, if it’s difficult to access, or not well-communicated, it isn’t doing its job. I will push for:
• Better signposting and faster response times.
• Consistent quality across services and personal tutors.
• More, and accessible, assistance with extensions, extenuating circumstances, DSA, and access funds.
• An RHUL Nightline – an anonymous helpline by students for students. I have already begun discussions with staff about this.
-
Increase student involvement in Students’ Union decision-making and planning.
You have opinions, and want the opportunity to have your say, but nobody is listening. Well, I hear you. Every voice matters, and we owe all of you our ears. I am committed to:
• Increasing transparency and communication around decision making, with options for student feedback.
• Instituting more focus groups and panels.
• Introducing an “SU events committee”, “Welfare awareness committee”, etc sat on by students to get their input, as happens in other universities.
