Health & Safety

Health and Safety Policies

It is the policy of the Students’ Union to maintain, as a priority, the health and safety of its members, employees, and visitors. As such all members of staff have a duty of care to your fellow employees and you must ensure you are familiar with the organisation’s Health and Safety Policies.

Health and Safety Training

We require all permanent and student staff to complete compulsory H&S training either online, face to face or both. You can find out more about this on the Training & Development page.

As a member of staff you must show a high degree of personal responsibility and do everything possible to prevent injury to yourself or others. We have a specific procedure in place for reporting accidents, incidents or near misses. Please read the procedure below and complete the online form accordingly.

Report an Accident/Incident/Near Miss Accident/Incident Investigation and Reporting Procedure

If you have any other concerns about the health and safety environment, for example, relating to a piece of equipment, a process, or a facility, please email the Deputy Chief Executive, Max Ross, who has delegated responsibility for the health & safety of the organisation.

Departmental heads and line managers have delegated responsibility to ensure that wherever risk having the potential to cause harm is identified, a risk assessment is carried out and appropriate control measures implemented.

Only members of staff who have undergone formal risk assessment training may undertake risk assessments on behalf of RHSU (with the exception of student group activity). This training will be provided by University health and safety staff. Individuals are responsible for ensuring that their training is kept up to date and for notifying HR of the date on which they have undertaken training for recording and reporting purposes.

All staff are inducted in the Fire & Evacuation Procedure on their first day of employment, which will include a walk around of the workplace identifying all fire exits, extinguishers and assembly points.

The number of fire marshals and assistants trained to aid any such evacuation will be continuously monitored, ensuring adequate provision at all times.

Where we are aware of specific access requirements for individuals, Personal Evacuation Plans will be put in place. If you think that you may require a Personal Evacuation Plan, please contact the Deputy Chief Executive, Max Ross, who will work with you and your line manager to complete one.

If the fire alarm sounds (a continuous single pitch note):
Do not put yourself at risk

Do not use the lift

Do not re-enter the building for any reason until the Fire Brigade confirms that it is safe to do so.
If you discover a fire:
Raise the alarm by operating the break glass switch at the nearest Fire Alarm call point.
These are located at various points, including the stair wells on each floor.
If you have been trained, and feel it is safe to do so, attempt to fight the fire using the equipment provided.
If this fails evacuate immediately, ensuring that no one is left in the room and closing the door behind you.
If you are located near a telephone dial 444 to alert College Security – they will call the Fire Brigade.
Fire Marshals should:
Coordinate Fire Assistants to evacuate designated areas within the building, and receive all clear.
Control ingress to the building with the support of Fire Assistants.
Encourage staff, students and visitors to evacuate to the assembly point.
Report to the Fire Brigade noting any absentees.

In the event that any person requires an ambulance at any time, you should, in the first instance, dial 444 (or 01784 443888 from an external line or mobile) to notify College Security, who will call for an ambulance.

In cases where you dial 9-999 directly, you should contact Security on 444 (or 01784 443888 from an outside line or mobile) immediately following the call in order to notify them that an ambulance has been requested.

In the event of a known or suspected heart attack, automated external defibrillators (AED) are available for use as an emergency life-saving response. The devices are fully automated and can be used by any individual without the need for first aid training, however it is recognised that not all individuals may feel confident in their application.

First aiders and security services personnel will be available to respond to such emergencies and will have experience in the use of AEDs. AEDs are located at:

  • SU Building Main Foyer
  • SU Building First Aid Room
  • Medicine Foyer
