Staff Inductions

Overview

The purpose of induction is to make new employees feel as comfortable as possible from the start of their employment, helping them to understand all aspects of their new role, develop the skills and knowledge to do their job well, understand our culture, our aims and our values and how their role fits with the rest of the SU.

Process

We have an induction process in place that offers support to new staff during their first 3 months of employment with us. During this time their line manager, HR and other staff in the SU will contribute to the induction programme offering a wide range of knowledge and information that will help them to quickly settle into their role with a good understanding of the wider organisation. Our induction is a two way process to enable new staff to find out everything they need and feel able to ask questions at any time to increase their knowledge and understanding.

You will be responsible for developing the induction programme for any new permanent members of staff joining your team with support from HR.

Induction will fall into three sections:

  1. First week
  2. First month
  3. First three months

You will be able to download an induction template from this page at a later point.

Planning

You will plan the induction and arranging meetings with a mix of relevant people within the SU and the University. Activities that the induction will include are:

  • Welcome to the SU
  • New starter paperwork, policies and procedures
  • Health & Safety – including fire evacuation
  • Building tour
  • Campus tour
  • SU values, culture and aims
  • Meet colleagues and senior team
  • Meet their Buddy
  • Role and responsibilities
  • Shadowing a colleague
  • Objective setting

You should work closely with HR to develop the induction plan so that you can be sure you have added everything needed to help your new staff member to settle into their job quickly and happily.

Take time to have regular 1-2-1 meetings with them so that you can work with them to maximise their opportunities to learn and develop.
