Many ambitious students at Royal Holloway aspire to careers in finance, yet face a critical gap: they lack clear guidance on which skills matter, how to develop them, and how to effectively demonstrate them to recruiters. As a non-target university, Royal Holloway also lacks the established recruiting pipelines and alumni networks that traditionally facilitate entry into finance careers, creating a significant but surmountable barrier for our students. While finance societies already exist on campus, none comprehensively address these specific challenges, particularly in regards to the ever-changing nature of the industry.
Bearish Ventures is designed to be an ecosystem of practical skill development, peer mentorship, and industry exposure. We will deliver this through five key pillars:
1. Live Investment Simulator. We will operate an ongoing investment fund with regular meetings where members track positions, analyse market movements, and discuss current industry events. This provides hands-on experience with real-world investment processes in a low-stakes environment.
2. Technical and Soft Skills Development. Through structured practice sessions, we will build competency in research methodology, investment platform navigation, economic reasoning, and professional networking: the exact skills recruiters assess.
3. Member-Led Research Platform. We will publish curated research and analysis from our members, creating a portfolio resource for the society while giving members tangible outputs to showcase on CVs and in interviews. Non-members gain access to quality financial insights.
4. Professional Skills Workshops We will deliver targeted workshops on topics ranging from technical analysis to interview technique, drawing speakers from our network and beyond. These are open to both members and non-members, establishing Bearish Ventures as a resource for the wider student body.
5. Inclusive and Diverse Community We are committed to breaking down barriers across all backgrounds and degree disciplines. We will actively collaborate with societies (eg. Women in STEM, ACS), invite diverse industry speakers, and seek out networking events that empower under-represented groups in finance. Our society equally accommodates to those who have an interest in personal finance rather than career aspirations.
