MTS: Musical Theatre

Royal Holloway Musical Theatre Society (known as MTS) is one of the largest and most active societies on campus, staging musical spectacles throughout the year. Whether you’re a keen singer, dancer, actor, director, producer, choreographer, musical director, stage manager, or just an enthusiast, MTS has a place for everyone.

We work all year round to stage full-scale performances, concerts, showcases, workshops, theatre trips and of course many socials!

We feature 2 auditioned productions in both Term 1 and Term 2. Each term features one Main Term Production, which in the past has included musicals both contemporary and classic such as Cabaret, RENT and The Addams Family Musical. These are performed in November and March every year. Alongside our Main Term Production in Term 1 is our brand new for 2019 MTS Mini Production, giving a platform for a smaller-cast and perhaps lesser-well known show. In Term 2 we hold  ‘Variations’ - the original first-year musical which in previous years has included Bake Off the Musical, Love Island the Musical, The Hunger Games: The Musical and Not Another High School Musical. This is the opportunity for our freshers to show us what they can do!

2019/20 marks the second year of our Lights Up Series, which is a series of non-auditioned showcases for people to show off their skills be it dancing, singing or acting. These will be every term, and a great opportunity for our members to practice in front of an audience. We are also super excited for the second year of our Behind The Curtain Workshops, which this year will cover all sorts of areas of theatre, including workshops on vocal technique and set construction, as well as masterclasses from industry professionals!

We also host a range of Socials each year, including Theatre Trips, Toast Nights, Movie Nights, Come In Your Socs SU Nights, Picnics, Karaoke Nights and more!

This year MTS will be supporting The Orpheus Centre as our Charity of the Year - a Surrey-based charity that uses the performing arts to empower young adults with disabilities by developing communication, social interaction and other independence skills. Throughout the year we will be raising awareness and money for the charity through events and campaigns as well as through our productions.

Here's a summary of our annual performances...

Term 1:

  • MTS Presents: Legally Blonde the Musical - This term's auditioned Main Term production! Keep an eye on our Facebook page for information on auditions and other ways to get involved in this production. *Auditions week commencing 30th September*
  • MTS Presents: Edges: A Song Cycle - This year sees the launch of MTS' first official Mini show, which will be Edges! This is another auditioned opportunity for members, but with a much smaller cast and crew than our Main Term production. *Auditions week commencing 14th October*
  • A Night At The Theatre - We take part in the annual ‘A Night At The Theatre’ alongside the other creative arts societies at Royal Holloway and encourage members to take part in as many of these societies as they wish. This year we'll be performing 'I'm A Believer' from Shrek the Musical, in addition to a preview of Legally Blonde - 'I'm A Believer' is non-auditioned and we'd love to see as many people up on the stage with us as possible!
  • Lights Up Series: Informal Concert - This is a chance to perform anything you like in a low-pressure members-only environment! Whether you've got an audition song you'd like to try out or there's a duet that you've always wanted to have a stab at, the Informal Concert is the perfect opportunity to perform, or just to watch others - plus, there will be pizza!
  • Lights Up Series: Winter Showcase - Taking place in December, our annual Christmas Concert has had a facelift this year and will be known as our Winter Showcase. We'll be performing a range of songs from Musical Theatre repertoire, including some Christmas-themed numbers and some classic Christmas pop songs too. This is the first of our open Cabaret-style shows of the year, and brings a great deal of Christmas joy to the Royal Holloway campus.

Term 2:

  • Main Term Production - We'll have another Main Term production this term, which will be selected at the end of Term 1. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for details!
  • 'Variations' First Year Production - A highlight of the MTS year, this is where our Freshers get to show us what they've got as they put together their own show which is written by, led by and performed by first year students!
  • Lights Up Series: Weekend Show - Another favourite event of ours, this is where we attempt to put on a show in just 48 hours! In the past we have performed the music of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, music from the movies, and Musical Theatre through time. This year promises to be even more exciting as we have some BIG plans to revamp the show... watch this space!
  • Lights Up Series: Informal Concert - Just like in first term, we also offer another Informal Concert in Term 2!

Term 3:

  • Summer Cabaret - Our final cabaret event of the year is our biggest and most spectacular event; Summer Cabaret. This production is staged in the final term of the year and often brings together a cast and crew of over 70. This performance, staged in the Student’s Union, includes over 20 numbers from different musicals, including one from each of our productions that year.
  • Lights Up Series: Informal Concert - Our third and final Informal Concert of the year happens in third term.

PLUS... more performance opportunities to be announced!
