Royal Holloway Musical Theatre Society (known as MTS) is one of the largest and most active societies on campus, staging musical spectacules throughout the year. Whether you’re a keen singer, dancer, actor, director, producer, choreographer, musical director, stage manager, or just an enthusiast, MTS has a place for everyone. We are also delighted to announce that we are entering our 25th year at Royal Holloway!

We work all year round to stage full-scale performances, concerts, showcases, workshops, theatre trips and of course many socials! In the past we have staged musicals both contemporary and classic such as Cabaret, RENT and Mack and Mabel. These main term productions are performed in November and March every year. Alongside our Main Term Spring production is ‘Variations’ - the exclusively first-year show which in previous years has included Love Island the Musical, The Hunger Games: The Musical and Not Another High School Musical. This is the opportunity for our freshers to show us what they can do!

In our 25th Anniversary year we are also introducing a new Lights Up Series, which will be a series of non-auditioned showcases for people to show off their skills be it dancing, singing or acting. These will be every term, and a great opportunity for our members to practice in front of an audience. We are also super excited to introduce our Behind The Curtains Scheme, a weekly workshop that will specialise in all aspects of Musical Theatre! We will be offering classes in different Musical Theatre skills, audition preparation and general Musical Theatre knowledge. These will be taking place at the university every Sunday from 16:30 to 18:30.

Alongside our Autumn and Spring full-scale performances, our other performances include...

  • A Night At The Theatre - We take part in the annual ‘A Night At The Theatre’ alongside the other creative arts societies at Royal Holloway and encourage members to take part in as many of these societies as they wish. We perform two contrasting songs in addition to a preview of our Main Term show, and love to see as many of our members up on the stage as possible!
  • Autumn Showcase - As part of our new Lights Up Series, Autumn Showcase is our first non-auditioned cabaret of the year where anyone can showcase anything they've been working on, be it singing, acting or dancing. It's a wonderful opportunity for absolutely anybody to get on stage, perform and gain confidence in front of an audience.
  • Christmas Concert - At the end of the Autumn term we perform our Christmas Concert, taking Christmas songs from musicals and popular culture, plus a number of our favourite carols. This is the first of our Cabaret shows of the year, and brings a great deal of Christmas joy to the Royal Holloway campus.
  • Weekend Show (Mis-Cast Cabaret) - The next cabaret and part of our new Lights Up Series is the Weekend Show. For this event we rehearse a themed cabaret across Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. We then open up Jane Holloway to an audience and perform the show on Sunday evening. It is a musical in under 48 hours! In the past we have performed the music of Andrew Lloyd-Webber, music from the movies, and music from around the world!
  • Informal Concert - In the same term is our Informal Concert. For this event we invite our members to perform any solos, duets, trios or small group performances that they cannot do at any other point in the year. This is not auditioned, it is a chance for all members to get involved and perform those musical songs they love to sing.
  • Summer Cabaret - Our final cabaret event of the year is our biggest and most spectacular event; Summer Cabaret. This production is staged in the final term of the year and often brings together a cast and crew of over 70. This performance, staged in the Student’s Union, includes over 20 numbers from different musicals, including one from each of our productions that year.

Socials include: Launch Nights, Pub Crawls, Come in Your Socs, Movie Nights, BBQs, Trips to West End Shows, Workshops, and many more!
