We are a collective of poets and readers whose aim it is to encourage members to read, write, and perform poetry. We run regular workshops and open mics to foster a creative community: whether you’re a published poet or writing your first draft, everyone is welcome!
Poetry Open Mics
Open Mics are a social and creative event running once a month on a Thursday evening, providing the opportunity to perform one's original poetry. We aim to create an environment where people feel at ease and inspired to share new works and celebrate successes. Whether you’re there to read or listen to your peers, your presence is valued.
These events are free to all- no membership required.
Poetry Readings
This year we're looking to introduce poetry readings, where we encourage poets to recite/perform a poem from their favourite author. From reading translated works in their original language to performing sonnets, we look forward to welcoming all!
Poetry Workshops
Workshops are a productive space for creative growth, where all members of varying levels of experience can collaborate and share their work. Poems, drafts, or just ideas are welcome and valued. We run workshops biweekly during termtime.
If you have any idea for a workshop, let committee know and we'd love to make it happen!
Publication Opportunities:
The zine is a monthly publication of members’ poetry and accompanying illustrations. It is a chance to celebrate and showcase the breadth of form and theme in the works of our poets. Some zines build on activities and ideas developed in workshops, whilst others centre on a theme or a quote from a poet.
Previously, we have had the opportunity to present our members’ work at a Small Press Release event in Senate House, London. We curated a special-edition hand-bound zine and shared our work with RHUL alumni and other London-based poets. This was a brilliant chance to take poetry at RHUL beyond campus, and we look forward to more similar events in the coming years.
Special Events
Poetry Society is an active part of campus life, collaborating with many societies. We have had successful fundraising and creative collaborations with Friends of Palestine, History Society, Shakespeare Society, amongst other student groups. Poetry Society is also a great place to meet RHUL alumni and learn to navigate a creative career and pursue poetry beyond university life. We’ve had great workshops and talks given by alumni and established poets, who helped members position their work in relation to creative careers and poetry beyond university.
