Skate

About us

Hello! We are the Royal Holloway Skate society, an inclusive and diverse society for students who have and have not skateboarded before. Ever growing and ever skating, we are a super relaxed community of Skaters that have collectively destroyed Skating stigmas.

We believe as a society, every student member should have the opportunity to enjoy themselves, feel included and find a like-minded group of friends, who enjoy skateboarding. Anyone is welcome to come to one of our Skate meet-ups regardless of their ability. We have multiple experienced Skateboarders who are more than happy to help you with your skating journey, whether it is landing your first Ollie! Or learning to grind a ledge, we are all in this together and super supportive of one another!

Our ethos

We are a group of friends who love skating! The Committee's number one priority in ensuring that everyone has a friend. The Skateboarding Society was originally set up by a group of like-minded friends with big plans! And we have carried that vision to this day. We are always open to suggestions, there is no hierarchy, and we are always having fun! We believe that for many Skating is a form of therapy or escapism, to get away from the daily pressures of life, at university this can be especially difficult, which is why we encourage everyone and anyone to join our society.

How we work

Feel free to join our WhatsApp group chat, this is is our main form of communication between members and how we set up regular skate-meets. Whilst there will be regular skate-meets for members, the WhatsApp group chat also has a secondary purpose for providing a community to like-minded students and skaters. Because of how we run things and how the community works, the WhatsApp group chat is also used for community lead skate sessions, in which a member of the society may choose to put in a message that they are going to Skate at XXXX place, this is then commonly met with other society members wishing to join them in that session for a little afternoon get-together social skate. We are a completely transparent society with the aim of building a string skating community at Royal Holloway, which is fun and inclusive for all members.

Memberships

Full membership (Free)

We wanted our Membership to reflect the core values of our society which is why the Skate society membership for the Full year is completely free! This is because as a society and community we feel that everyone should have the opportunity to join the skating community, aiming to make the society as accessible as possible. We also understand that in order to do skateboarding you use first have a skateboard, whilst the cheapest can be picked up from around £30, you may find that the skate community is incredibly generous and sharing, the society will often have many different skateboard parts such as old decks, wheels and trucks, of which we can help you assemble and hopefully alleviate some of the expenses. We also plan this year to begin the collection of club equipment too further help new skaters!

Supporter membership (£5.00)

Whilst the full years membership to our society is free, this year we have initiated a supporter scheme which can be bought anytime throughout the year. Because there is no income into the club we wanted to add a supporter membership for those who want to support the aims of our society. With this contribution we plan to use the money to give back to the community and the members of the society, putting it towards competition prizes as well as growing our club equipment to increase the accessibility of the society. There is no requirement to buy this membership.

Patron Membership (£10.00)

Whilst the full years membership to our society is free, this year we have initiated a supporter scheme which can be bought anytime throughout the year. Because there is no income into the club we wanted to add a patron membership for those who want to support the aims of our society. With this contribution we plan to use the money to give back to the community and the members of the society, putting it towards competition prizes as well as growing our club equipment to increase the accessibility of the society. The Patron Membership (£10.00) is once again an additional add-on, as apart of the supporter scheme, any contribution towards the society is greatly appreciated and will be a grateful addition to the growth of our community. There is no requirement to buy this membership.

Socials

We have a growing socials calander that includes far more than just Skateboarding, with social events that include regular Pub socials and plans to include far more events, we often get invited to skateboarding events around the country and we will also have the opportunity to travel to both outdoor and indoor skateparks. The university also holds COME IN YOUR SOC which we will be attending, allowing you to dress up in the most 2000s skater fit possible!

HalloWizzy

Throughout the years, Skate society has taken part in setting up the yearly HalloWizzy skate Jam held at Windsor Skatepark. This is a strong community event that is held around Halloween every year and involves dressing up in your Spookiest costume, a best trick competition, prizes as well as lots of food! We hope to continue this tradition with the addition of other skate Jams thoriughout the year such as a Summer Jam BBQ. We also operate on a carpooling system so do not worry about transport as we often have member with cars!

What if I don't Skate?

As you well know, the society is dedicated to helping both students who have and have not skated before, however, this heading aims towards student who ride something else such as Rollerblades/skates, scooters, ripsticks or BMX. We are open to ALL! The current society has a variety of different skaters, including Long Boarders and Roller Skaters, so do not feel that you can't join the society because you do not Skatebaord! As a society, our aim is inclusivity and fun, even if you are just looking to hang out and meet some new people we are open to all.
