Well, we’re on a roll, because that’s not where it ends! We've discovered that some letting agencies and landlords have been overcharging for your security deposits – so it’s important that you’re aware that you might be owed some money.
The recent letting fees ban that will come into effect on Saturday 1 June 2019 includes a whole string of changes, including capping security deposits at five weeks of rent.
This means that if your tenancy agreement starts after 1 June 2019, you should get in touch with us immediately to check that you have not been overcharged. We’ve been monitoring deposits charged by agents and landlords, through our free contract checking service at the SU Advice Centre, to make sure that they are sticking to the rules.
Last week, we noticed that a lot of students were charged the equivalent of six to eight weeks of rent, so we got legal guidance for them. University of London Housing Service’s legal advisors confirmed that these students should be eligible for partial refunds.
Email firstname.lastname@example.org with your tenancy agreement requesting a contract check, and we will do rest!
This information is relevant to the majority of our students, so please help them by sharing this information. We all know that student life runs on a tight budget, so help us make student life better at Royal Holloway and spread the word!
