Be part of the University Challenge team!

The application process for University Challenge is now open, and you’ll be excited to hear that we’re looking for students to form a Royal Holloway team so we can enter again this year!

Sadly our team of entrants last year were up against some incredible competition, and didn’t quite make it to the recorded stages of the show. But we’re hoping this year’s team can take Royal Holloway one step further and get to battle head to head with other universities whilst the ever-brutal Jeremy Paxman fires challenging questions at them.

Remind me what University Challenge is again...

If you’ve never heard of University Challenge, well you’re missing a treat. The gameshow sets out to find the best of the best, the crème de la crème of university students, all looking to take the final win and pick up that prestigious trophy.  Contestants are put to the test with a range of questions from various subject areas, scoring points for each correct answer. But keen beans who buzz too early and answer incorrectly get points deducted.

The title is usually taken by an Oxford or Cambridge College, but other winners include the University of Manchester and Imperial College London. It’s certainly not a done deal until you hear the gong, with the winner often not decided until the final few moments.  The Royal Holloway team has previously made it through the first few rounds, but there’s no reason we can’t take the title from reigning champions Balliol College, Oxford this year!

I want in - how do I join?

We’re looking for enthusiastic students to ‘Give It A Go’ and try out for the team. If you think you’ve got what it takes, you can enter yourself here. We’ll contact successful applicants, who will be asked to take a short written test on Monday 23 October.  We will ask the highest scorers of this to return for us to decide the final five people who will be put forward as our official entry for Royal Holloway

So what have you got to lose? Take the short test and see if you can make it onto the team.  You might even surprise yourself, just like we think this guy did…
