Blog: Democracy, Pizza, and the All Student Meeting

Tasha Barrett, your President, takes you through this term's All Student Meeting.

Do you know what I love? Pizza. Obviously there are a lot of toppings to choose from; pepperoni, chicken, peppers, pineapple (if you’re a monster). But there’s one topping that tops them all in my opinion. And that topping is democracy. The sweet, sweet flavour of adhering to the SU constitution is what I want out of my Tuesday evenings, and this coming Tuesday 21 November at 6:00pm, I’ll be getting just that, and hopefully, so will you!

That’s because it’s time for the All Student Meeting, one of the highest decision making bodies in the Students’ Union. The meeting is open to absolutely everyone, so you don’t need to be part of any councils, societies, committees or anything else for that matter. If you’re a Holloway student, you’re in!

Until Monday at midday, you have the chance to submit motions on anything you feel the Union should be doing, supporting or lobbying the college for. Send motions to President@su.rhul.ac.uk and they will be checked by the steering committee before the meeting. Come prepared to speak on your motion to engage other students in the room and ready to answer questions! A motion template can be found here.

Why is it important?

Everyone’s views matter to us, so it’s important that we get as many people in attendance as possible. The more people attend, the more representative we can be as a union, which is better for everyone! In the past we’ve heard your views on safe space policies, a referendum on the NSS boycott, and even the name of the library! There really are fewer better ways to get your voice heard on issues that matter to you.

This time around we’ll be focusing on our democratic structures. We’ll be working out how to best organize our committees, councils, and student groups in relation to the SU, so as to best benefit you. We’ll also be taking a look at the Bright Ideas platform, and whether or not it’s been doing you all justice in getting your opinions heard.

But that’s not all! You’ll also get a chance to hold your officers to account, myself included. So any questions you might have on what we’ve been doing, we’ll be happy to answer.

So if all of this sounds interesting, then make sure you’re with us in Stumble Out on Tuesday 21 November at 6PM! Looking forward to seeing you all!

P.S. There will be real pizzas there. Not just hypothetical democratic ones.
