Bar Work

What do you call a dancer in a bar? A tap dancer.

With an abundance of water-hole regulars and Students' Union attendees, jobs in bar work are never short of needing more people. This involves concocting and serving alcoholic beverages for customers, attending cloakrooms, cleaning the bar etc.

Pros: Quite flexible during holidays and exam period, good party working atmosphere, evening shifts don’t conflict with academic timetable, learn to make cool cocktails.

Cons: Dealing with drunk homo-sapiens on a regular basis, may finish very late.

Retail

Just a few skills you generally pick up in a retail job.

A job in retail covers anything from your local supermarket to working in a clothes store, basically usually requiring you to work behind a till and engaging with customers regularly on a face-to-face basis. It is also one of the more readily available jobs to get during the festive period as many stores need an increase in staff to help with the increse in customers.

Pros: Staff discounts, tends to be a lot of temp work during vacation periods, easy work.

Cons: Might be expected to work during weekends, very competitive as it is quite a popular choice for part-time jobs, never-ending festive music during the holidays!

Service Work

Waiters and waitresses are good at multiplication because they know their tables.

This type of work entails the service of food and drink in eateries. It will usually require you to take orders, wait tables, general cleaning and maintenance, washing dishes etc.

Usually popular with the student demographic because they often come with free food privileges (yes, you read that right).

Pros: Free food, commonly encounter tips regularly on top of your wages, easy to acquire as no prior experience is needed.

Cons: Usually long/late hours with little breaks, can make you feeling groggy and a bit smelly at times.

Administration And Office

When you’ve lost access to Microsoft Office, go outlooking

Although not very common, some organisations, such as the Students' Union, offer part-time jobs to students involving admin work. It commonly takes the form of a receptionist or general office work. Tends to involve dealing with customer enquiries and paperwork.

Pros: Sociable working hours, easy work, gain valuable professional office experience, free coffee.
