After an incredibly strong start to the season that sees Royal Holloway sat 50th in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) table, eight of our teams remain unbeaten with five of those sitting at the top of their respective leagues.

Teams currently sitting atop of their leagues without defeat are Men’s Fencing (1A), Men’s Badminton (3A), Men’s Football 3rd team (6A) and Women’s Netball 3rd (7A) and 4th (10A) team.

Co-President, Sports and Development, Alex Reilly, spoke of his pride for the unbeaten teams as well as the ones also at the top of their leagues: “It is great to see so many teams who secured promotion last year really kicking on and showing they can play at such a high level!

“I would like to give a particular shout-out to the Men’s Fencing 1st team who are on the cusp of the Premier Division and on an outrageous 17 game win streak. Could they be our first team to get there?

“Well done to everyone who is either unbeaten or at the top of their league, deciding who win’s team of the year is going to be a tough one at this rate!”

Playing For Each Other

Sitting at the top of BUCS 6A are Men’s Football 3rd. Speaking about his team’s performance so far, Alex Clarke said: “We have just really clicked as a team. While it is obviously important to have the talent to win games, it is vital that you are playing for each other and not just with each other.

“I see every one of them grinding out performances until the final whistle and that's why we don't get beaten.”

Adam Webb, badminton captain, also attributes his team’s success to the effort they put in on court: “The team put 100% effort into every match, game and point last term which is why we are top of our league and unbeaten. Our success has come from tough training and coaching sessions but also socialising off the court. I look forward to the second half of the season.”

Netball are the only club to see a women’s side top their league unbeaten and in fact they have two! Both their 3rd and 4th team sit comfortably, unbeaten at the top of their leagues. The fourth team are chasing back-to-back promotions at the top of 10A while the 3rd team destroyed LSE 90-16 to extend their lead at the top of 7A. This win also saw them win the first ever ‘Bears of the Week’ award!

The other teams yet to taste defeat are Women’s Tennis (1A), American Football (1A) and Women’s Badminton (2A).
