Savoy Opera - Candide! 5/6/7 March SU Hall. 7.30pm. £5 students / concessions or £7.
Savoy Opera Society is extremely proud to present Leonard Bernstein’s operetta, Candide!
This has been a labour of love for Director Nic Fisher and Musical Director Kieran Stallard, but the hard work and dedication of a supporting production team and phenomenally talented cast is due to pay off this weekend when the show opens at the SU Main Hall.
Based on Voltaire’s 1759 satirical novel, the musical adaptation was brought to the audiences of Broadway in 1956 by the genius behind ‘West Side Story’ and won the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. It has been re-released throughout the decades by amateur and Broadway casts alike. All roles call for vocal elasticity and terrific comic timing. Savoy hopes to re-create the original magic of the show with a contemporary spin. Nic’s minimal ‘masquerade’ concept promises to attract a varied audience, and the sparkling overture will undoubtedly prove a hit with all in attendance.
Candide follows the story of the eponymous, fresh-faced innocent from Westphalia, as he embarks upon a journey to rescue his love Cunegonde from the clutches of various miscreants. On his way he encounters a woeful old lady, a brutal army, and many familiar faces from his past. Eventually, Candide discovers that even his bountiful optimism has its limit within the ‘best of all possible worlds’.
