Royal Holloway International, who were heavily involved in the organisation and success of the International Evening in Medicine, have been recognised and praised on the College website in the following article:
Royal Holloway International helped to kick start the College’s One World Week by hosting a fun-filled and creative International Evening.
The event was one of many to celebrate the differences in culture, history, entertainment, music and food in a cultural week of celebrations.
The RHI evening was open to all but was especially intended for those who join the College from far-off shores and was organised by International Officer Helen Lytras and a small team of RHI staff.
The perennially popular event was held in student bar Medicine, and over the course of the evening nearly 400 students dropped in to lend a truly global feel to the party atmosphere.
The evening’s entertainment included contributions from the Royal Holloway jazz group Signum, RHUL Gospel Choir and a Korean percussion group from the Music Department, as well as an ice-breaker foreign-language game, an international picture-quiz and food from a variety of worldwide culinary traditions.
Sheryl Simon, the Director of Royal Holloway International summed up the event’s unique appeal, saying: “This International Evening has been more effective than ever in encouraging international students to appreciate their role in fostering a unique cultural environment on campus as well as in broadening the College’s wider international outlook.”
She added: "With new friendships made, the students – whose languages ranged from Arabic to Welsh – are each making their own special contributions to the increasingly international College community of students and staff at Royal Holloway."
The week’s line up was organised by the Students’ Union, Sean O’Donnell, General Manager, said: “The International Evening has become a signature event and has been a fantastic start to the Students’ Union's One World Week. This is our biggest cultural week of the year and we’re so pleased with the positive feedback we’ve had from so many students.”
SURHUL would like to add their thanks and congratulations.
We would also like to thank all the volunteers and staff and the College who helped make One World Week such a resounding success.
