Big Bears Wednesday Round-Up

The sun was shining to provide a glorious backdrop to Big Bears Wednesday, and VP Sport Dom Brown was there to soak up all the action.

The sun was shining bright for this term’s Big Bears Wednesday, which saw a plethora of great home fixtures bask in the heat while we had a number of teams travelling away to bring it home for the Bears. To complement the great sport on display, a number of events tookplace down at the Sports Centre to encapsulate the great atmosphere and keep spectators/players encapsulated in the fixtures.

We had a charity bake sale from Cheer, who added to the vibrant atmosphere with their energetic volunteers. Alongside the bake sale, the Rowing club set themselves, and onlookers, a tough challenge to row 350km throughout the day between five ergs. This was a tough challenge, especially in the heat, but with a fantastic effort from committee, members and passers-by who decided to add to the total, the club was able to hit their goal as the sun was setting. A fantastic effort from them!

What went down?

Badminton served off the day of fixtures with a 7-1 victory against Portsmouth, while the Men's 2's were crowned champions with a game to spare after an 8-0 walkover win over University of the Arts Men's 1's. Congratulations guys!

Women's Hockey 3's finished their season with a 3-1 victory over St George's 2's, so a massive well done to them! The sports hall was filled with Fencing when I went in there to watch, which saw the Men’s 1’s foil, epee and sabre themselves to a 135-118 win over Queen Mary 1's.

Riding were also competing yesterday off site, they won their final BUCS competition of the season and placed 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th individually. A fantastic effort from the team, and thank you for keeping us updated with your success!

Netball 1's smashed Kingston 1's 37-14 in a comfortable win which allowed them to rotate their squad and even give a chance for a 3’s goal shooter to step and perform excellently, which was fantastic to see. Ultimate Frisbee flew their way to a strong 15-6 victory over St. Mary's, while the Rugby Men’s 1’s secured yet another victory, 33-14 against University College London Men's 1's (RUMS), to continue their great run of form which puts them in a fantastic position to win the league.

Finally, and in amazing news, the American Football club have won their BUCS league with six wins and one defeat, which means they progress through to post-season and the play-offs. They kick off this Sunday at 1pm on Eastfields against Cambridge. This will be a huge game, so please get down and support them! A fantastic club and very well deserved.

Well done to everyone!

Once again, thank you so much to groups, committees, members and spectators who helped make Big Bears Wednesday a success in the sun. I love watching you all compete, raise money for charity, and support the Bears with a smile on your face. We push through to the end of this term with the likes of league deciders, cup finals, Colours Ball and Varsity to look forward to. So make sure you get your tickets for these events before they sell out!
