Freshers’ Festival 2021 Wrap-Up

We hope you all had a fantastic welcome to campus and that our newest members are settling in well to life at Royal Holloway. With Term One in full swing, we’ve wrapped up Freshers’ Festival but let’s take a look back at what was an absolutely awesome week!

We hope you all had a fantastic welcome to campus and that our newest members are settling in well to life at Royal Holloway.

Since arrivals weekend, we've hosted over 35 events across campus ranging from Tea @ Tommy’s with your sabbatical officers to the legendary Glitterbomb ft. Baga Chipz and a lovely ‘Crafternoon’ at Design a Door Sign.

With Term One in full swing, we’ve wrapped up Freshers’ Festival but let’s take a look back at what was an absolutely awesome week!

Freshers' Fair

After last year’s virtual Freshers’ Fair, we were ecstatic to be able to invite all Royal Holloway students to an in-person event. Over two days, we saw over 3500 of you at the Sports Centre! With 110+ student groups, we’re sure you all found a sport or society that you want to get involved in and Freshers’ Fair was a great time to chat with our lovely committee members on their stalls. There’s still loads of time to join a club or society and we can’t wait to see you trying out loads of new activities. It’s been amazing seeing so many of you attend sessions over the last two weeks, including a mind-boggling 250 of you turning up for the Badminton taster!

It wouldn’t be Freshers’ Fair without a ton of freebies and we didn’t disappoint! We had the classic Freshers’ Fair staple of Domino’s pizza, serving up slices for you to chomp on, with Amazon kindly providing free coffee. We gave away a staggering amount of uni essentials – 1000 condoms, and around 1500 hand sanitisers. Don’t forget, the freebies don’t stop there - you can grab free condoms, tampons and sanitary pads at the Advice Centre, upstairs in the Students’ Union!

What went down?

As we welcomed new and returning students back to Royal Holloway, our staff worked incredibly hard to organise a week full of activities, and we hope you had a blast. We hosted everything from day-time events and fun socials, to nights full of music, dance and drinks! It was a week packed with events where we had the pleasure of welcoming fantastic artists like Ella Henderson, 220 KID, Jonasu, ArrDee and Karen Harding - as well as loads more!

The VK claw returned! It wouldn't be Royal Holloway without a VK based stat and you have not let the team down. Over the course of the week, you got through an impressive 9,804 bottles of VK, yes you read that correctly. That’s the equivalent of 408.5 cases or 4.5 pallets, madness!

We kicked off this academic year’s Give It A Go programme with a bang! These are smaller-scale events that are predominantly alcohol-free and focused on you meeting new people in a fun, relaxed and welcoming environment. A whopping 1011 students came along to the Petting Zoo for some animal therapy. Not only did you get to make some furry friends, it was a great chance to relax against the backdrop of the iconic Founder’s Building. We also saw over 110 of you singing your hearts out at the Lion King Disney Movie Night. We saw a few tears too (don’t worry – we won’t tell anyone). There’s a load more Give It A Go activities planned for Term One, so check out our events calendar to see what you fancy!
