Sharanya's Year as President

I can’t quite believe the year is over, but here’s a blog trying to cram a year's worth of work into a few pages of a Word doc!

I can’t quite believe the year is over, but here’s a blog trying to cram a year's worth of work into a few pages of a Word doc!

What a year it’s been! After 5 years on this campus, it's time to say goodbye to the place I’ve called home for half a decade! Royal Holloway is an incredibly special University. What makes it special isn’t just the pretty orange walls of Founders, but the students and staff who work together to make this place a home and community for all.

MY JOURNEY TO SU PRESIDENT

When I joined RHUL, it was a very different time; my move-in day into Tuke was in 2020, and we were deep in the midst of COVID-19. I wasn’t quite sure how I’d go about meeting friends or how I’d find things to do.

Nonetheless, I figured it out and found a community of friends in the Royal Holloway Politics and International Relations Society, which I eventually ended up being elected the Secretary for in my final year. I’m sure a lot of our Student Leaders can appreciate this, but it’s safe to say I did a lot more ‘societying’ than I did ‘degreeing’

That wasn’t the end of my student politics journey, though (surprise surprise), and after some encouragement from my lovely housemates, I ran for the position of Vice President Education. To my pleasant surprise, the student body put their faith in me and elected me that year, but also for the next year when I was elected President.

WHAT I’VE BEEN UP TO THIS YEAR!

Before we get into the update on my manifesto and what other projects I’ve been working on this year, I just wanted to say thank you!

I genuinely would not have gotten through this year without your support, your comments, your emails, and messages expressing just how much the things I was doing were positively influencing your lives. You motivate me every day to be better, and I owe you all for everything we have achieved this year!

THANK YOU

WHAT A WHIRLWIND OF A YEAR!

It’s truly been an honour to serve students these last two years, and to work alongside student leaders and staff members to make student life better at Royal Holloway. This campus has given me everything. From being a shy first year to being elected SU President, I owe so much of my journey at RHUL to the Students’ Union, and its incredible staff – thank you!

I’m leaving you in the safe hands of our wonderful incoming President, Olivia Davies. She is going to absolutely smash her term as President, and I can’t wait to see how Royal Holloway changes for the better because of her!

It's always sad to say goodbyes, but I’m sure I’ll be wandering campus again sometime soon!

Until then – El Prezzo, signing out!
