Dearest Reader,
Welcome to my Priority 8 Progress Update. I hope the new term has started well for you. As we move into Term Two, I am excited as the weeks ahead promise to be busy and full of meaningful progress.
Alongside ongoing priority 8 work, I am currently developing a series of awareness and informational videos for both priorities. These are designed to clearly explain the support, opportunities, and resources available, ensuring students feel informed, confident, and empowered to access what is available to them.
More Affordable Food on Campus
Expanding Affordable Food Options
Access to affordable food remains a key focus of this priority. I am working closely with several University departments to develop a proposal for a student voucher system aimed at supporting those who may be struggling with the rising cost of food. My intention is for this initiative to be genuinely collaborative between the Students’ Union and the University, ensuring it is not only supportive but also sustainable and effective in the long term.
I am also very pleased to share positive progress on the joint Loyalty Scheme proposal. The University has agreed to move forward, and both the Students’ Union and University teams are now working together to shape what this scheme will look like in practice. This work is ongoing, and I look forward to sharing further updates as development continues.
In addition, I will be running a campaign under this priority titled “Budget to Bite”, taking place during the week commencing 16 February. More information about the campaign on the RHSU website.
Cheaper & More Frequent Local Transport
Improving the Student Transport Experience
Improving the everyday transport experience for students remains an important part of this priority. I am currently working with the University’s Estates Team to explore ways to enhance the environment and experience at the Founder's Bus Stop. The aim is to ensure it is more comfortable, accessible, and better suited to student needs.
Wider Engagement & Long-Term Solutions
The Education Piece element of this priority is currently paused while further research is undertaken to ensure any future work is meaningful and evidence-based. During this time, I will continue producing informative video content covering a range of useful topics, helping students stay informed and connected to available support.
Looking Ahead
Term Two is already shaping up to be a vibrant and active period, with two History Months, ongoing campaigns, and several new initiatives on the horizon. I am looking forward to continuing this work, engaging with students, and building progress across all areas of Priority 8.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update and for your continued support.
Until next time,
Vaishnavi
