Starting university is a mix of new faces, new places, and new opportunities. One of the best ways to make the most of your time at Royal Holloway is by getting involved with our incredible range of sports clubs and societies. Whether you’re looking to pursue a lifelong passion, try something completely new, or simply meet like-minded people, there’s truly something here for everyone.

We’re proud to offer over 35 sports clubs, ranging from adrenaline-packed American Football to the precision of Fencing, the fast pace of Tennis, and so much more in between. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone who hasn’t picked up a racket since school, there’s a team or training group that will welcome you.

And it doesn’t stop there. With over 100 societies, our campus is buzzing with opportunities to explore your interests beyond the classroom. You could find yourself belting out show tunes in Musical Theatre, capturing the world through a lens in Photography, or connecting with fellow fans in our Swiftie Society. From cultural groups to academic circles, hobby-based gatherings to quirky niche communities, you’ll be amazed at just how many options there are.

Why should I join a Sports Club or Society?

Joining a club or society isn’t just about filling up your calendar. It’s about making connections, stepping outside your comfort zone, and trying things you might never have the chance to do again. You might discover a hidden talent, meet your future best friend, or simply have stories to tell that you wouldn’t have otherwise experienced. These activities are often where some of the best memories of university life are made.

Freshers' Fair

The perfect time to explore all these possibilities is during Freshers’ Fair on the 23 September. This is your golden opportunity to speak directly with the committees that run each club and society. You can ask questions, find out about upcoming events, and get a real feel for the community you might be joining. It’s also the ideal time to try something that catches your eye, you never know what could become a big part of your university journey.

Take it from me...

Speaking from personal experience, getting involved was one of the highlights of my time at Royal Holloway. I was part of the Tennis Club, which kept me active and introduced me to a fantastic group of people. I also joined the Musical Theatre Society, which gave me the chance to perform and have fun in a completely different way. And being part of the Catholic Society offered a sense of community and support that meant a lot during my student years.

So, as you start this exciting new chapter, take a look around, sign up for something that sparks your curiosity, and see where it takes you. Your future self will thank you for it.
