We’re delighted to announce that the Union Shop has been recognised by the Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey for its extraordinary work to support students throughout the pandemic.
Last year, in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the Union Shop (which is operated by the Students’ Union) reacted quickly and launched a click and collect and delivery service. During the unprecedented times, we wanted to relieve some of the stress and worry that lots of students were facing when it came to getting doing their shopping. Members of staff at the Union Shop worked tirelessly to make sure that students were able to get their hands on the essentials, from fruit and veg to loo roll and soap. Students living within a 2.5 mile radius of campus were able to have their shopping delivered with a click of a button, which was an essential service for those who had to self-isolate.
On 26 October, the Union Shop received the Lord-Lieutenant’s Award for outstanding support for local communities during the pandemic. The presentation took place in the Picture Gallery on campus and we couldn’t be prouder! The award was presented by Deputy Lieutenant (and College Principal), Professor Paul Layzell, to a number of departments at the University including Catering, Hall Life, Residences, Security, the Union Shop and Wellbeing. A few members of staff attended from each department, but the awards were made to the entire team. Ci (Union Shop Manager), Mahshid (Union Shop Deputy Manager) and Emily (student staff) accepted the award on behalf of the organisation.
We spoke to Ci about how it feels to be recognised by the Lord-Lieutenant:
“It is nice to know that the hard work and dedication of the Union Shop team to keep trading and serving our community during the pandemic has not gone unnoticed. It's a great honour for the SU and the shop to be nominated and to receive the award as recognition and I am particularly pleased for all my team members.”
