If you’re engaged in sports at Uni in any way, you’ve probably heard the word BUCS a lot. But what does it actually mean?
What Is BUCS and Why do we play on Wednesdays?
If you’re engaged in sports at Uni in any way, you’ve probably heard the word BUCS a lot. But what does it actually mean?
BUCS stands for British University & Colleges Sport. It basically the national league for university sport in the UK. Think of it as the Premier League, Champions League and World Cup all rolled into one… but for students. Every week thousands of students all over the country represent their Uni against others in loads of different sports. That’s why it is important to come down to support your bears.
How do Fixtures Usually work?
- Wednesdays: The Main Fixture day. Most BUCS games are on Wednesday afternoon, so you’ll see so many athletes in their kits going down to the sports centre!
- Saturdays & Sundays: Alongside BUCS, we compete in LUSL (London Universities Sports League). These are weekend leagues against other London universities, perfect for students who are busy on a Wednesday or want a less serious match (still competitive but not as much compared to BUCS)
- Mondays: A quieter day, but you’ll sometimes find fixtures or rearranged matches then!
BUCS isn’t just about winning but it is also about building a sports community on campus and making friends (whether you’re cheering for your bears from the sidelines or taking part).
