Cinema

We are the go-to society for anyone who is passionate about the art of cinema and watching films on the big screen, with a captive audience. This is a place to discover films you may not have watched otherwise, and to discuss them with a group of like-minded film-lovers: vintage classics, underrated gems, foreign film, and even new releases. If you're less about the technical side and more into the straightforward enjoyment and appreciation of cinema - we're the society for you!

What we do

As a Cinema Society, our main aim will always be to provide weekly screenings of great films, and an opportunity to meet fellow film-lovers at Royal Holloway.

Currently, these screenings take place every Thursday at 7pm in Bourne Lecture Theatre 2 with a proper cinema atmosphere: lights turned down low, no phone screens, no talking - followed by an optional trip to the pub after for drinks and chat.

These screenings are open to everyone: members and non-members. Rather, members are given the chance to vote on what will be screened. Specifically, a weekly members-only poll from a curated selection of films based around a certain theme, director or genre: Hitchcock, Korean film, 80s comedy. We expect lots of people campaigning for their favourite in the run-up to our weekly sessions!

Why should I be a member?

While admission to our core sessions is free, supporting us with a membership to Cinema Society will grant exclusive benefits and a more active role in our community. Here are the perks:

  • Priority entrance if screenings ever get too full
  • The ability to vote on each week's film
  • The ability to submit films to be voted on during our 'Members Choice' weeks
  • Access to the Members Zone of our Discord server - an exclusive chat area where you can discuss news and box office, show off movie collections and memorabilia, and view our society Letterboxd feed
  • Access to any additional members-only events: quizzes, cinema trips, speaker events etc.
