Welcome to Royal Holloway Chess, the ‘mind sport’ on campus!

Our club offers a wide range of opportunities for both casual players and for those who are looking for competition. This includes fun games of chess, teaching, socials, casual tournaments within the club and tournaments against other universities and clubs. Whether you’re looking to represent your university in competition or just want to learn how to play chess and relax with us in the evenings; come join our close-knit group of chess enthusiasts on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings as there is something for everyone!

Purchasing a membership will give you access to all the chess sessions, tournaments, teaching and socials. This will give you an opportunity to join us in the evenings and meet with like-minded individuals where you can improve your chess skills. The membership also includes tournaments against other universities and clubs throughout the year including friendly games, online tournaments and varsity. This is an excellent opportunity for people of all skill levels to represent your university, get better or just to have some fun! The friendly nature of the club creates a special environment where we can all share our passion for chess and make fond, lasting memories!

Amidst the current COVID-19 pandemic, we are trying to organize face-to-face chess sessions in term 1 with social distancing and other safety regulations in place.
Since March, much of the chess world, including tournaments, have moved online. Our club has started taking the same direction with the use of chess websites and resources which we can all use to play online and stay active in term 1 even if our normal chess sessions are limited. This means that tournaments and other events that may be affected by COVID-19 will still take place in the first term.

We are looking forward to welcoming and hearing from new members for this year! We have created a WhatsApp group chat where you can get to know us and ask any questions that you have about the club and what to expect ( Alternatively you can message us directly on Facebook ( or drop us an email at
