BUCS Round-Up - 05/12/18

The penultimate week of term one fixtures provided us with some fantastic results across the board. Unlike last week, the weather gods were on our side meaning no cancellations and all fixtures going ahead as planned!

Before I get onto the BUCS fixtures, I'd like to give a special shout-out to the Polo Club who hosted their first Inter-Holloway tournament on Wednesday at Ash Farm Polo Club. Well done to the team and look out for a spotlight blog on them soon!

What Went Down This Week?

Onto the Wednesday fixtures now where we start with Women's Fencing, who swiped and lunged their way into a comfortable 135-86 victory against Reading 1sts. They celebrated with their traditional box of Krispy Kreme’s which went down a treat.

There was a clean sweep for Women’s Hockey this week, with the home game seeing the first team beat Imperial 1sts 3-2 in a tense match, where Holloway used their short corners to full effect. It was great to see the Men’s teams watch on in support! Meanwhile the 3rds (pictured below) secured their first league success of the season with a fantastic 3-0 scoreline against St George's 2nds.

I was able to watch the majority of the Men’s 1st XV Rugby match against Chichester, where a confident Holloway side ran out 35-15 winners. Joe Triegaardt ran rampant down the wing, the Simmons brothers controlled the breakdown and Ben Coker often broke the Chichester line of defence with some powerful running. Well done to the boys and as always there was fantastic support on the sidelines.

Men’s Volleyball served Reading a 3-2 defeat as the Bears advance to the next round of the cup. Huge congratulations to them in a tense game and we hope the cup run continues. There was also joy for Netball 4ths who smashed Roehampton 55-5 away from home, a fantastic performance which will surely keep Coach Shelly happy for a few days. Well done girls!

There was a big BUCS victory for the Men’s Football 2nds as a brace from Sean Turner and Nathan Rollock inspired the boys to a 5-1 victory against Imperial Medics. In LUSL the 4ths remain top of the table after demolishing Imperial 7ths 9-0 away from home.

Highlight Of The Week

This week's highlight week comes from Men's Badminton 2nds who battled hard against St Mary’s at home in the sports hall. Hamza Ali and Ash Leontyne led from the front in very competitive matches to keep control over a pesky St Mary’s side. The Bears ended up sweeping their opposition aside to secure an emphatic 8-0 win - their first clean sweep of the season. It was amazing to sit and watch the support from the side of the sports hall, with friends and team mates on hand to offer encouragement and advice to the players. This is the sort of club unity that is prevalent across the clubs on campus and it is truly inspiring to see this kind of team morale and atmosphere. Elsewhere, the Men's 1sts excelled in a 6-2 win over a strong Imperial Medics side. Well done to Badminton this week on two fantastic results!

As always, make sure you are tagging @SURHUL in all your social media posts and stories. If you are having a Christmas meal this week or next (or have already had one) then I hope you enjoy/enjoyed it as they are a great social occasion to relax and celebrate a great first term of competing!
